Payphone with credit card

Hi there. It was £6.56 each time. Judging by the fact that call lengths were between 5 seconds and less than 3 minutes, yet all of the calls were the same price leads me to believe that this is an initial connection charge regardless of the length of time your conversation actually lasts but I still don't understand why? It seems unfair. Does anybody have any advice on how I can get this refunded?
Oh... An I do have a mobile but it conked out a couple of hours before and the phone box was the resort.0 -
Has anyone else experienced this? Seems excessive for what should be 60p per minute.
60p per minute is the cash price, if it was a BT payphone their website says that with cards there is a minimum fee of £1.20 for local/national calls but excluding mobiles, so the fee you were charged may well be their minimum fee for credit card calls to mobile numbers.Judging by the fact that call lengths were between 5 seconds and less than 3 minutes, yet all of the calls were the same price leads me to believe that this is an initial connection charge regardless of the length of time your conversation actually lasts but I still don't understand why? Yes you are probably right, it's most likely the minimum fee as mentioned above.
I don't get why you can't understand why there would be a connection/minimum charge?
Were the costs mentioned anywhere, displayed in the phone box, on the screen etc?0 -
Just checking - what exact process did you use to make the calls?
Was it definately a BT phonebox? Did you swipe the card, or dial a number then enter the card details?
My hunch is that whatever you did, somehow you got through to a third party company similar to 0800Reverse who charge way over the BT rate. What does it show as on your credit card statement?0 -
BT's website says for cash payments 'The minimum fee is 60p (includes 40p connection charge). Local and National* calls are charged at 60p for the first 30 minutes, then 10p for each subsequent 15 minutes or portion thereof.'
'*Excludes non-geographic numbers (e.g. 0845, 0870), Directory Enquiry calls, calls to premium rate numbers, mobile phones, international numbers, personal numbering, paging services and calls made via the Operator. Other restrictions apply. '
For credit and debit cards they say: Call prices - 20p per minute. Minimum fee £1.20 (includes £1 connection charge) for Local and National* calls. Please call 0800 661 610 for current prices for your call.
*Excludes non-geographic numbers (e.g. 0845, 0870), Directory Enquiry calls, calls to premium rate numbers, mobile phones, international numbers, personal numbering, paging services and calls made via the Operator. Other restrictions apply.

Perhaps the OP was phoning a premium rate number without realising it?0 -

I could have scored a mobile with call time for less than that. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

Payphones are one of the biggest scams on the public in recent years. As you say, no ordinary person in their right mind would need to use one. There are however, vast swathes of the Asian population who do not use mobile phones and are only able to use a payphone. This is encouraged by many local mosques.
In light of this, BT provide payphones solely to avoid the accusation of racial discrimination. At huge cost to us, of course.
*Rolls eyes*
Look, we get it. You don't like brown people.
Now can we all move on?0 -
Im going to go get a halal burger from mcdonalds now then to the payphone near the mosque to call the premier inn and book a room and then get some weed so i can smoke it in the hallway and after i need to go to coop to get my ukash voucher then to subway for when i get the munchies. xD0
