Want to cancel Virgin tv but keep broadband

We have a Virgin media package of phone, tv (XL) and broadband (cable). We recently had some work done on our sitting room which meant we could not use the tv for several weeks, and realised we did not miss it that much. As it happens I have a Panasonic DVD player which includes a Freeview tv receiver. (We even have a (historic) roof aerial socket next to the tv.)

So we have been thinking of cancelling the Virgin tv element and using Freeview instead. We do want to keep our 60mb Virgin cable broadband connection. We have had the bundled package (tv phone broadband) for around 15 months and it is a continuation of our previous Virgin package as we have been with them for quite a few years. I don't know if that makes any difference to being able to cancel the tv element.

So my questions are 1) Can we cancel the Virgin tv element while the contract is ongoing 2) Can we still retain the broadhand and phone element if we do this? 3) If so how do we do it and what are possible repercussions (ie would we have to pay more for the phone for example)? 4) Is Freeview a viable service (we live in an area without reception problems)?

Alternatively I suppose we could just downgrade to the basic tv package. (L, I think) Anyone done this and how much does it save/cost?

if you plan to keep the landline as well, then i would just downgrade the TV to the M package, which would be just freeview.

it'll work out the same cost as having just broadband and phone.

the contracts are usually 12 or 18 months, so if u've had the current setup for 15 months, you have at most 3 months to go in the contract (but you might not even be in a contract).

They would also be more willing to let you downgrade than remove it completely if you are still in contract

Just had a very interesting conversation with Virgin who basically said I am getting a £20 month discount on the tv because of my TV XL /60mb BB/Phone bundle, and if I downgraded tv element to M+ tv, I would lose the discount so overall I would only save £2 month. .....

I don't have a TIVO box I have a V+ box. I said I did not need a smart tv because I had a Virgin bundle. That would still be the case if I downgraded to their entry level tv service option, In fact we have been redecorating our living room for the last 2 weeks and watched hardly any tv and I haven't missed it. So I have been asking myself if I even need the current full XL Virgin tv option. Alternatives are to downgrade to M+ or even change to Freeview as I have a receiver built in to my dvd player. I would keep broadband. I don't see how this changes my view that I don't need a SMART tv.

Why do I need a smart tv? And what can I get with the minimum of bells and whistles but a first class picture?

i should point out that there is a different between M+ and M

M is just freeview, but it is given free (including a tivo box) if you have broadband and phone.
