Virgin connection speed rumour or true!!!!

hi, ive been with telewest for at least 4 years and kept our phone and broadband package when it switched to virgin. i cancelled the tv as we watch alot of sky one and we are now with sky. anyhow we are on the elite package for broadband which costs £37 a month as my husband plays games online alot. i got told that now virgin media have changed their connection speed to 2mg during peak times and 10 mg off peak or vise versa. i am very annoyed at this as i am paying £37 for a top package and getting a crap connection speed. does anyone know if this true cos if it is im going to kick off with virgin big time if it is!!!!!

Why don't you test your speed here or here and find out for yourself.

or test for yourself - it's "not generally true" but some people are suffering, whether that's because Virgin are doing something different doesn't seem to be clear, though.

Yeah they have introduced traffic shaping during peak hours. During the peak hours customers on the top product will be on a 5mb service during these hours & back up to their full service outside of these hours! :)

Between the hours of 4pm and 12pm you are allowed to use your connection at full speed until you hit a set limit. Once you hit your limit your full speed connection is then downgraded to a slower speed.
I hear you say its not fair, and I kind of agree, but this appears to be standard practice now across the board. Other companies either make additional charges when you hit the limit for every bit you go over, or terminate your connection altogether.

Well you still are getting the same speed, you just need to monitor your usage in the peak times to stay in accordance with their traffic shaping T&C's :)
