ASDA online shopping - charged twice

Please move this if it isn't in the right place, but I'm not too sure where else to post.

I did an online shopping with Asda on Friday for delivery Saturday. Total came to £48.81. Order came on Saturday, actual total was £52.65. Checked online banking yesterday and the £52.65 had been deducted and showing on my statement, but there was a difference between my balance and actual balance which I wasn't expecting. After calling my bank, they tell me Asda had run a pre-authorisation for the £48.81 when I placed the order as well as taking the £52.65 when the order was signed for at delivery. Called Asda, who said it can take 7-9 working days for the £48.81 to be credited back to my account! How can they take both amounts?! Is there any way I can get my money back quicker than this? The guy on the phone at Asda said this is common practice, but I've ordered groceries online for years and never have encountered this before.

I never do online food shopping for a host of reasons.

How can a retailer offer online one day and then ramp the prices before delivery? I realise their argument is that prices change and some prices will go down. But surely it is better business practice to just charge the figure quoted in the basket at time of purchase.

Would annoy me no end, especially when I feel the supermarkets are generally at it with their dubious offers anyway. We have taken to using Lidl for the main shop and Tesco if we have to.

    OK rant over :)
  • I'm really not fussed about them changing the prices by a few quid, I am however raging at the fact they have taken nearly £100 of me for £50 worth of shopping!

But the point is if they hadn't changed the price during that time, then that £48.81 that had been 'reserved for Asda' would've been confirmed and deducted from your account.

It is because the amount Asda now want is different, that the earlier reservation is still hanging around.

Asda haven't actually taken that £48.81, it's just not available to you for a few days.
  • That doesn't make it right or fair though. Why should the OP have their account limited through no fault of their own?
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

As per Wealdroam, the first requested amount is never actually claimed by Asda, the bank just ring fence it. I believe it is possible to be released early if Asda advise the bank in writing that they will not claim the original amount, however they rarely do this.

    Yes, I agree entirely.

Just saying that the point Hintza made about changing prices, which the OP dismissed, would resolve the 'double charge' issue.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. ;)
  • They could just charge the amount on the day of ordering, then either charge/refund the difference on delivery day. None of this "holding " nonsense which ASDA seem to be renowned for.

I guess that would require the customer to confirm their details again as it would require authroisation twice.

I don't know why it seems to be only Asda that have this issue. I use Sainsbury but have also used Tesco in the past and never had this issue.
  • same has happen to me with asda , but my bank the co-oprative is aware what happens after a quick phone call the transaction is cancelled funds become avaliable .
