Biology A Level

My daughter is doing her A levels at the moment so has more or less finished college. She did not know what she wanted to do next, be it university or working. She has a love of animals, so only recently decided she would go down that avenue and see if there were any places left at university covering those subjects.

She applied for an Animal Behaviour and Environment course at Wolverhampton Uni and also Worcester. She has been turned down because she does not have Biology A level. She has Double Science GCSE.

Does anyone know where she can do a Biology A level in just one year so she can apply next year for the animal behaviour course?

Thanks

  • How did she find it? My brother did the AQA one. Got straight As at GCSE but said he failed that AS without a doubt!

You can do one year A-Levels, but it's likely that you'll have to pay for it at a crammer or resit college. Your daughter might be able to persuade a local college to take her on to do the course in a year, but it would be hard work without the proper support (also I'm not sure how it would work in terms of progression through the modules ... I took biology A-Level about ten years ago, just when the modular system was introduced, and as I recall the modules did kind of 'build' on what had been learnt before). The National Extension College does offer a home-study Biology A-Level, might this be of any use?

I wanted to do a science "A" level in a year when i was in the process of relocating and my local tertiary college offered one year cram or resit courses for those who had either failed or wanted/needed a better grade. Just cost the normal college fees (then about £200 for the year i think). So I got to do the course in a year. Was quite easy to do so. Good luck.:T

You can use tesco clubcard vouchers to pay for courses at the National Extension College

Your local Learning & Skills Council should be able to advise on where locally it will be available, failing that, if you have a branch of "Connexions" around, they will be able to speak to your daughter and give her career advice, including advice about A-Levels and where they can be taken.

If you visit your local community college they will have admissions staff who will be happy to speak to your daughter about the options open to her.
