    How about a 106 diesel? No ECU or turbo to worry about failing and cheap as chips for parts. I done my front brakes and pads a few years ago when i had mines and still got change from £30

    They're not really prone to rust, very light so tyre wear is nice and slow as well. Rear tyres on mines had done about 50k miles when i got rid of it and they still had another 10k left. Engines are solid as well, just very slow. I got around 60mpg combined on it

    it may be cheap to run, but it looks like a 17 year old chavmobile, the sort of car teens buy and mod to the nth degree with silly aftermarket parts.
  • No I only get 17p a mile Fuel Allowance. I'm not sure how you claim back the top up? I'll ask my boss :) I'm doing about 250-400 miles a week. At the moment I am driving a 1.8TD 56 Mondeo which is pretty economical in itself anyway but I am struggling with the size of the thing on all the country lanes. I think about half my mileage is on the motorway other half windy roads.

    I've just turned 25 (female) and need to change the insurance but I am just a named driver on the policy, zero no claims this car will be all mine though. Keeper is 29, 3 years no claims.

    Are you the main driver of this vehicle? If so why is it owned and registered in someone elses name?

    If you are the main driver then you're probably fronting which is illegal. The insurance policy should then be in your name. If you are married to the owned/reg keeper then its a different matter

    I drive a Ford Fusion 1.4 diesel. Get a consistent 55mpg from it. Small, but big enough for luggage and passengers when needed. Not sure how much they are nowadays though.

    No I use it a lot less than the Keeper. But I have used it quite a lot this last week which is why I want my own.

    For example:

    He uses it Mon - Fri 8am - 17.15
    My use is 17.20 - around 22.30 Tues, Thurs, Fri
  • i get 45p a mile from my company and its very generious, car is worth £1500 prolly, has depreciated, costs me 20p a mile to run in fuel.. The payment means the company reclaims the VAT back and I have a nice 25p buffer that I get to pocket - in practice I draw that out of the company tax free.

    You run your own Ltd Company I suspect. I have a similar cost model, but the trick is to save some of the 25p for repairs and replacement. Overall, my car cost me £4500, 80% of it's use is business, and the diesel costs about 16p a mile. The 29p a mile I get, just about pays for the depreciation, tax, insurance and repairs, and tyres. If I ran a cheaper car, I'd save the depreciation.
    I debated with the accountant making it a "pool" car, but then I'd not be able to use it for private use at all.
