Reccomendations for work run round?

I've start a new job that involves a lot of driving but my mileage payment is only 17p a mile and I'm spending a fortune in fuel at the moment.

I want to buy a small economical car, preferably diesel with a small engine that is cheap(ish) to maintain, tax, insure etc...

But I do not know what to go for? I have a budget of £1000

I've seen some Pug 206 1.4HDi's or Fiesta 1.4D but wasn't sure if they were good reliable motors.

I'm not bothered about speed/nippiness as long as they can manage 70 on the motorway!

Thought I would ask for some ideas here, Last time I got a car on my own it blew up after a week :(

Not sure much advice can be given for that budget.

Main thing is take someone who knows about cars with you to check a few cars out.

Type into Ebay your price range, type of car, and set the distance to local and pick a few out and consult with your mechanic friend about which ones are worth going to look at. Then spend a day with them checking them out.
  • HDi engine is pretty reliable.
  • How many miles are you going to be doing and journey type?

My large 2L diesel estate is better on fuel on a run than my sisters small diesel rennault.
Heavy city traffic and hers is better.

17p a mile is approx 36mpg. What car do you have now?

There are not many cars around that wont do 70mph. Very old classics. Anything made from the 1960's will do at least 70mph.

Always puzzles me when people say they need a motorway car so it needs to be big and powerful. Ive done Dover to Birmingham in a 1300cc Austin Metro with the speedo off the top of the clocks..

An engine designed in the late 1950's..

Will an older HDi diesel need more servicing than an equivalent and cheaper to buy petrol? So actually costing more per mile.

    17p a mile is outrageous.

OP don't forget to claim the remaining 28p back as an expense for tax purposes. OK it's only 5.6 p per mile but has to worth having if you are doing lots of miles.
  • I used to drive a Pug 106 diesel and a Clio MK1 diesel at different times ....used to cost me around 10p per mile about 7 years ago....so in todays money probably 13-14p now.

Not bad to drive if your not bothered about speed but not very pleasant place to be for long periods of time.

If it was me I would personally prefer to go got the 306 diesel as opposed to the 206. They are still quite economical and reliable and would be much better on the motorway.

17p  is very poor, I get 45p a mle for the first 10k miles, plus an extra penny a mile for each passenger and they cover the additional cost of business cover.

Pre 2004 HDi are pretty reliable until the evil of the DPF was unleashed. Although most of the 1.4s didn't have a DPF.

    HMRC rates. 25p after 10K.

To the OP you can claim tax relief on the difference between what they pay and HMRC rates.

So over say 10K, you've effectively got an extra £2800 of tax free allowance which might be worth approx £700 to you in a tax rebate. 6 to 11 p a mile depending on your tax rate

Don't forget you need business use insurance which depending on your age might be free, or they might want an arm and a kidney.
