Is my landlord allowed to ask me to pay for installation of a shower?

Your dad is going to charge you for doing the work?
Is he your step-dad?Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0 -
What type of boiler do you have, how is your water pressure ?
If they are both ok then get a thermostatic tap set with shower feed. This saves drilling holes requires a bit of plumbing work, no electrics.
Can be had for £50 to £100.00. They are much better than 90% of electric showers. Also has the added advantage that makes running a bath at the right temperature is easy as pie.0 -
Have you considered asking the landlord for a contribution?
What the landlord might consider a small contribution might be enough to do the whole job if you are only paying your dad a small amount for labour, and he can probably get a trade discount on the materials.
I didn't think of that, so thanks. I may see how he feels about it.I have autism, so apologies if I come across as rude. It may just be my communication problems.0 -
@thesaint no, he is not my step-dad, he's my dad. But I would not expect him to do it for free as I'd be taking him away from a paying job to do it. Also, he paid for everything for me for the first 16 years of my life, so I don't begrudge paying him for his labour.
@Ulfar thanks for the idea. That actually looks great. I'll keep it in mind I have autism, so apologies if I come across as rude. It may just be my communication problems.0 -
How long have you got left on your tenancy? Keep in mind that any improvement to the property could well increase the potential rental price, especially if showers are so rare in your area. I wouldn't be surprised (no matter how nice a guy he seems) if your landlord increases the rent at the end of your tenancy agreement if you put a shower in.0

I'm half way through my tenancy, as signed, but this landlord is inclined towards long lets. I would hope that there wouldn't be a rent increase, but I know it is a distinct possibility.
Luckily, however, he owns the house next door as well, which already has a shower, and rents it out for the same price as we pay (it was advertised the week after we signed our contracts) so I'm hoping to avoid a rent increase because of this 😊

1) if paying for an improvement yourself, I would ask the LL for an extended fixed term contract, so that you are guaranteed to benefit from the work for at least 12 (18, 24, whatever) months.
How long is your current fixed term, or is your contract periodic (monthly)?
2_ As for the smoke detector, no, there is no obligation on the LL to provide. as you seem to have a gas boiler, I would recommend you get yourself a combined CO/smoke detector ( eg here).
As with the shower - you can ask the LL to provide it, or pay, but it's up to him.0 -

Half way through, but how long left? 3 months left on a 6 month tenancy? 6 months left on a year tenancy? Or has it gone onto a monthly 'rolling' contract?
Is the house next door exactly the same as yours (same size, same condition, garden size/maintenance same etc etc)?
Good idea from G_M to get the landlord to extend your tenancy.
Regarding the smoke alarm, I got the fire brigade round to mine to do a free fire safety check, they gave me free smoke alarms. Maybe worth checking if they do this in your area?0 -
Sorry, half way through a six-month contract.
The house next door is a mirror image of ours (we're semi-detached). The only difference I know of is that we have a paved back garden and they have a lawn.
I thought the fire safety check thing was for the elderly (my grandma had one done recently), but if it's for everyone I will look into it, thanks.

It might differ between councils maybe? I'm 30, so def no where near elderly hahah!
Have you seen inside next doors? Is it up to the same standard as yours (decorating/kitchen/bathroom etc)? If it is, if it was me, I would feel quite secure in the landlord not raising the rent. However, even if it is, I wouldn't shell out on putting in a shower unless the landlord guarenteed continuation of my tenancy by extending it in writing. Tbh I wouldn't ever pay to improve someone elses home myself but thats just me. I dont have them money to spend hundreds on an improvement that I would only benefit from for such a short period of time. I guess to me its sorta like fitting a new stereo into a hire car lol0
