We boxed ours in - two batons of wood fixed (screwed) full length floor to ceiling and then MDF cut and fixed to the batons, filled the edges and the painted to room colour.
One runs in a corner of the dining room and the other about 18" - 2' from the corner, where we have coving the top piece of boxing was painted white to follow the line of coving and the rest painted wall colour.

Batons 3cm (square) but that depends on the depth of the pipes from the wall, and the thickness of the MDF was .5cm

We stopped the boxing at the same height as the skirting board - open at the bottom end but you can't see that (our pipes are fitted quite low to the floor but where they turn we have furniture in front of them, you could if you need to add a box to run at skirting height totally enclosing the pipes from view).

(If you only put a few small nails (recessed and filled) to fix to the MDF to the batons and need to remove the front at some point then you will not damage if you need to remove for any reason somewhere down the line).

Not sure it would work on a flat wall near the fireplace but i've got radiator pipes going up in the corner of the lounge and i used ceiling coving. You can paint or wallpaper over it.
