I remember posting that sometime back and was shot down in flames
The only meat I trust is that which I buy from my local butcher who slaughters his own cows and lambs
Means pork is mostly off the menu in this household because there is very little pig farming in Ni and I refuse to buy non British meat
However I do now eat game which is locally shot0 -

It's interesting that you have found a butcher who slaughters on the premises. That's another nail that was hammered into the coffin of English farming, when the government effectively shut down the small, local abattoirs..
As for the red tractor, I have never had any real sense of what it meant. Certainly it wasn't good quality meat as some of the 'red tractor' produce sold by the major supermarkets using that symbol is just horrible.0 -

Most of the meat we ever bought from Tesco when we shopped there was pretty dreadful. Waitrose meat is in a different league, and even Aldi is considerably better than Tesco's (like the wine).
Red Tractor is a food assurance scheme which covers production standards developed by experts on safety, hygiene, animal welfare and the environment amongst other things. The Red Tractor logo on pack means your food or drink has met these responsible production standards and is fully traceable back to independently inspected farms in the UK.
Except for Tesco! :rotfl:0 -
Red Tractor will be hacked off at this as ut undermines consumer confidence
This is the info for pig farmers

I must admit the red tractor meat I bought was pretty ropey.0

Try Morrison's that's all I can say. I was very sceptical but I kept reading how good their meat was supposed to be, so I found a Morrison's and tried it.
By and large, I will always buy from a local butcher when I can but Morrison's isn't bad - in fact its meat is hugely better than either Tesco or Sainsbury's. Think Waitrose bit without the 'reassuringly expensive' pricing.0 -
I won't buy Morrisons' meat firstly because although I'm told they sell organic, I've never seen it and secondly because the meat always looks bright red - really offputting - makes me wonder if it's been hung at all.0

You mother is right. Tesco was always seen as a downmarket store and what reputation it had was based on Jack Cohen's policy of 'pile it high and sell it cheap'
Tesco's original own brand, Delamare, was a byword for mediocrity, too.
I doubt anyone over 40 will ever be able to see Tesco as much different from, say, Asda, whatever image polishing it goes in for.
My mother would always use Sainsburys bags to carry home her Tesco shopping - she wouldn't want the neighbours to know she'd been shopping there:D0
