Bought a used car - no spare key

After I had agreed to buy a used car from a dealer and part-exchanged my car dealer tells me he doesn't have spare key. A key will cost £235 !! He expects me to pay. What can i do?

Lots of used cars don't come with a spare! It's something you need to ask when buying.

    £235 isn't too bad!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • There is a good chance that the £235 is the retail cost for the key.
Why not have another word with the saleman if they will be able to get you a spare at the trade price. (This is providing that where you bought the car from is a dealership for the make concerned).

If the key is of the type that you can program yourself, you might be able to find a suitable one for sale on ebay that will only need cutting and programming.

It will also most likely be their price/main dealer price.

check a local key cutter and see what they would charge.

You'll be able to get one for between £80-120, phone some local locksmiths. As its the spare i wouldnt bother going for the remote features.

Also check your documents for the key code. If you've got that it makes the cost of getting a spare cheaper as it can be used for the coding.

My current car was the first to come with two keys.

Its quite normal to get one - you'll have to cough up unless the dealer can help.

Tell them you don't need a spare key and will not be taking them up on their offer.

Is your insurance policy due anytime soon?

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.

Don't lose the primary key - it is possible not to lose keys.
