i have a proberty and the tenant qualifies for a replacement boiler,, as she had to apply herself,, we gave her a number which we picked up at the local town hall which was for the government energy saving scheme,,, she had problems getting through to the number so gave up and phoned some one on the internet who also as promised a new free boiler,, is there any differance in who actually organises this work,,,who should i go with? do they all offer the same service?? and do exactly the same work,, is there anything i should be aware off

What?! This has to be a serious abuse of the scheme. How can your tenant apply for a boiler to be fitted in YOUR property?!

I want a new boiler right now as I am without heating, I work 40 hours+ per week and it's going to cost me over £2,000 to have the boiler replaced.

You are a landlord, you have an income. Why should my taxes pay for a boiler to be fitted in YOUR property?

    This is nuts, absolutely nuts...

If you can get away with this, maybe I should take in a lodger on housing benefits and get them to get a new boiler fitted for me. Double win. New boiler and an extra income!
  • andy thousands of landlords have had this over the years all above board,, if i were you i would concentrate on getting your own boiler fixed

Its not a serious abuse of the scheme, in fact the policy makers know that the private rented sector has some of the most inefficient houses, and as such, positively encourage tenants to take up this offer. It is mainly the tenant that benefits from a more efficient boiler rather than the landlord.

Also, Andy_WSM, your taxes don't contribute to this scheme. You will however find that your energy bills are higher next year as a result of all the measures installed under this scheme.

In answer to 7777777's question, it shouldn't make much difference who installs the free boiler, however I would lean towards a local installer with a reputation to maintain. I would ask whoever you deal with, which boiler they will be installing, and ask opinions (perhaps here) as to whether or not its any good. You should also ask if they will be upgrading heating controls to building regs as part of the deal.

I agree 100% with everything said above. Good advice given there.

Andy, wind your neck in and complain to the Government if that's how you feel instead of being rude to the people who can't change the rules.

If the private rented sector has some of the most inefficient houses, then the landlords should spend some of their income and !!!!ing fix it.

What signal is it sending out? I work hard, own my home and would love a free boiler. I don't get one, but slum landlords can. Disgusting

    "Slum" landlords??

That's a bit of sweeping generalisation!
  • Isn't it the tenants who benefit from having a more efficient boiler?

No. Tenants come and go, but the landlord has a shiny new boiler at no cost, which means he can charge more for the property than if it had no boiler. Win. It's so not right it's mental.
