  • You have no control over whether you shave or not? Really? If so, goto the Dr's and get a medical certificate stating this and take it to the employer!

In all seriousness, you do raise a valid point regards obesity issues as well and some companies do have clauses in place I believe for this but its generally more accepted that people will be fat over scruffy facial hair.

The skin issue is slightly different as I would expect most to be a medical issue but if its hygiene issues that affect other staff or customers the employer should act once aware.
Well I do have control over it as I don't do it, it doesn't stops snide comments like "overslept today". Frankly in the winter it keeps me warm. Not messy - its clippered regularly.

Was tempted to ask my boss that asked why i hadn't saved the same question back to her, but didn't want to risk being called racist and sexist.

    Totally agree.

What a strange and frankly inflammatory post!

Pot kettle, its no more inflammatory than stating I wouldn't last 5 mins somewhere.
  • I know that's a fair enough point as I'm suborn and dont take kindly to people trying to have authority / superiority over me or telling me I must shave daily.

Wow - when you're at work - your boss does have authority over you.
Thanks, yes that's the kind of culture it is and its no longer for me. Im thinking about public sector or being self employed.

Double Wow - I don't think the public sector is any easier - and they manage performance, have proper absence management procedures and SOMEONE will have to have 'authority' over you.

    Self employed might be best.

my cfo doesnt mind i have stubble - tattoos or a lip stud.. and why? because my work is solid.

Perhaps the OP's isn't solid so they will pick on other things too.

Unfortunately it's the way of the world.

Would you care to elaborate? I have stated nothing of the sort?

I work in the public sector and quite frankly get fed up of people suggesting its an easy life. I left home at 6 this morning and will get home at 8 tonight.

Also I have worked in both the private and public sectors and it is perfectly reasonable for employers to stipulate minimum standards for personal appearance.

    Hello,

I'm not prepared to work longer than my contracted hours.
    thanks
Not sure if I should go into this but a manager called me into a meeting a few weeks where he complained that I wore polo necks and chinos despite them being listed as in the dress code for business casual and said i needed to shave. I wore the clothes I feel comfortable in and don't like to shave every day as I get a rash and sensitive skin. .
I know that's a fair enough point as I'm suborn and dont take kindly to people trying to have authority / superiority over me or telling me I must shave daily.

This why you wouldn't last five minutes.

I'm a woman but even I know if you can't shave every day the you should grow a tidy beard, not have stubble.

Business casual is tailored trousers and a shirt. Chinos are casual in my opinion, but if your policy says you can wear them and you are being reprimanded for wearing them, is it because you are untidy looking. Are they clean every day? Freshly laundered? Ironed? I dislike my uniform. It's polyester and unflattering but I have to wear it. I can't just wear what I feel comfortable in.

My supervisor at work has authority over my work only, not over my look or what I do outside my working hours. If its not related to my work it is not something I expect my supervisor to make suggestions / comments on.

I left the public sector as I was fed up with the inefficiency and useless people just waiting for their pension.

I said I would only do my contracted hours after returning from being signed off sick with exhaustion. I 'm no longer willing do 100+ working hour weeks mostly working for free.

The contract says business casual and lists chinos and polo necks so it seams reasonable to wear what my contract states.

You have a uniform of course you have to wear it, I wear what my contract states.

Really? people should not have subble? its either a beard or clean shaven?

I believe some religions require men not to shave, so employers could find themselves on dodgy ground if they don't approach this issue sensitively

so you cannot be disciplined for it. Again, I ask, is it cleaned daily and ironed?

outside of work you can look how you want to, but stubble is often considered to be untidy, it can looked unkempt. It can look like you rolled out of bed late and couldn't be bothered. Tidy beards are the alternative to shaving.

I'm not sure if you're aware of how arrogant you come across, are you like this at work?
