Query over Transfer of Car Ownership
Hello
Hope someone can help or advise.
My father passed away recently and my mother would like to give his car to my son. The car tax expires at the end of this month.
How do we go about this? Obviously we can't tax the car with the documents we have at present as they are in my father's name.
It may be a while before we can get everything sorted but we are wondering the best way of dealing with everything especially as the tax is about to expire. Do we get it registered as being off the road until we get it transferred to my son's name?
And then when it is registered in my son's name persumably we get another form to start tax from that point?
Also, as we have not found out yet about registering it into my son's name. Presumably there must be a form that the DVLA would need together with a death certificate before it could be put into his name.
Any advice on this would be helpful please.

Question was asked the other day --> https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4763204
but all you really need to do is fill in the V5 and send it off, you'll get an additional driver listed on the V5 but i think you might be able to get the details transferred (think it was mentioned on the other thread).0 -
Regarding who is the registered keeper of the vehicle see:
https://www.gov.uk/tell-dvla-about-bereavement/keeping-the-vehicle
Tax is tied to a car rather than a person, when it changes ownership/ keeper the tax goes with it. I doubt that anything would happen if you were to tax it online whilst the transfer of registered keeper is happening as long as the insurance etc is in place.0 -
If you have the relevent documents (insurance & Mot) there is no reason why you can't tax it now, the name on the V5 isn't important.
The only problem you may have is if the insurance has been cancelled due to the bereavement.
To register in your sons name simply send the V5 with the correctly filled in "change of keeper" section.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
You can tax it with the new keeper slip at the bottom of the V5C. Make sure you send main part off though.
Otherwise the DVLA will be sending fines and that maybe upsetting.
Is it a disabled tax disc? If it is you also need to change the taxation class to PLG.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
