Fathers Car

Hi,

My father passed away 2 weeks ago and I intend driving his car in his memory.

I would like to know the process of how to get the car transferred in my name and insurance in my name. I have 4 years NCB which i stopped using in 2011 with a gap of 2 years and was a named driver with Direct Line for 1 year in 2013 will this be of any use with insurance companies?

Thanks.

Sorry to hear of your loss.....

Provided he left the car to you (and you can prove it), then the DVLA should be your first port of call. If there is any chance of your ownership being contended, then I'd hold fire, because you could end up in a real mess.

Ask insurers about your NCB and named driver. Some may accept it but others may be cheaper.
    Sorry about your dad.

So are you insured on it now (2013) as a "named driver" with Direct Line?
  • As far as I remember there are a few insurance companies that let you have a three year gap in NCD.
If the car isn't in your name you can either send the V5 off in your name or fill in a V62
  • DVLA will let anyone apply for the V5 of a vehicle - you can apply for your neighbours if you wanted. As far as they're concerned it's a civil issue.
  • Sorry to hear about your dad.

Worth contacting one of the brokers such as Adrian Flux. They were able to find me an insurer who would take into account my expired NCD.

How many years where the NCD expired? I just had swift cover tell me to bug off as its 2 months over their 2 year NCD expiry date limit. I said its only 2 months not 2 years but still said no can do! fthem.

It was either just over 3 or just over 4, I can't remember. I also can't remember the insurer, sorry.

There was only one insurer that Adrian Flux found. I seem to remember they were willing to give me a 7 year NCD certificate (what I had previously) after a year.

In the end, I didn't go with them because there was some problem with my job title which jacked the price up.
  • According to this thread --> https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2785780 Aviva and Co-op should insure you. Possibly others but i didn't read it all.
