we have given sky the elbow after 7 years of in my view being ripped off,we are going down the freeview freesat road, now heres the silly question they said my sky will be switched off on oct 9th,is that just the box?and the dish will still work with a freesat box and built in freeview?

thanks in advance

Yeah, you should be fine. I was under the impression that Sky boxes could be used as Freesat receivers without a Sky subscription of any kind, but I could be wrong.

Yes , yes and yes, the recording features if it has any will stop, and I believe you can pay for a freesat from Sky for a one off fee. The dish will be fine as will be the freeview telly. You could get a freesat recorder box, if you wish to record from Freesat. I have a Humax Foxsat-HDR which tends only to be available as re-conditioned these days, but it can have the ability to run as a DNLA server, and a samba share server, and you can ftp/telnet to it etc. http://www.avforums.com/forums/freesat/1747997-media-file-server-bundle-foxsat-hdr-release-4-0-a.html

    There are a couple of hdrs on here £129 / £159 http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/prodCat.asp?cat=factory

    NOTE
If I remember "FreeSat from SKY" is slightly different than "FreeSat" think their is a few channels here and there are added and a couple missing.

    I might be wrong though!!

Will work but you will lose the ability to record as well as access to your existing recordings

To be clear, when they 'switch off' your Sky, they are just removing your subscription to the paid Sky channels. Your box and dish will continue working as normal, and your viewing card will become a 'Freesat from Sky' viewing card, which means you can watch all the free channels (99% of the ones you get with Freeview), plus some Freesat-from-Sky channels which might not be available on Freeview.

If you haven't already set up your favourites on your Sky box, you might want to think about putting all the 'free' channels in there at (or as many as you can), otherwise using the TV guide will become a slightly frustrating experience, as it will still show all the Sky channels that you can't watch!

Oh, and as others have pointed out, if you've got Sky+ recordings, you will lose the ability to watch them or make new ones.

You won't get any channels via your TV's built-in Freeview tuner unless you connect an aerial to it.
With the existing box and dish you will get Freesat from Sky channels and no Sky+ features. With a new Freesat box you can retain the PVR features and get the Freesat channels.

Are we talking BBC Freesat, Freeview or Freesat from Sky?
When I cancelled my Sky subscription I kept the equipment and just went to Freesat from Sky. There are just a few less channels but I think it still has more channels than BBC Freesat?
The plus with BBC Freesat is that you can get a box which records - and no subscription.

Freeview wasn't an option as we get no aerial signal here.
  • We have used Freesat from Sky for many years, like the ease of use.
We pay Sky £10 a month to use the record and other facilities on our Sky box. Much cheaper than a normal Sky subscription.
  • thanks all, have now ordered a freesat box to avoid sky,and tv has built in freeview so should get what we neeed

For the first year of my Sky subscription I paid £10.50 per month for their basic package and HD pack.

I think you're being ripped off - £10 just for recording is crazy when you can get a decent Humax pvr for <£140 or haggle with Sky and get a package for <£15 per month
