private number plate

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I have just bought a car of a private seller with a private number plate. They have now said they would like the private number plate back and are asking for the vin number & tax disc info & that the old plates are in the car to change over.

I have seen a fee of £80 on the dvla site, can you tell me if it would cost me this to put the original number plates back on or is this just to transfer to the new car?

  • Did they agree this before the sale or is the car now in your name and they've asked for the plate?
  • Hi

They mentioned it before the sale but there was no mention that it would cost us just that they would have to pay an amount & that we could put the old number plate back on once they had arranged it all with the dvla

    thanks for reply

If you take the plate off, if it don't go straight onto another car, it will have to go on a retention certificate, which is another £25 on top of the £80 fee.

Get them to pay for it in advance.

Ok if they do it all. it will cost you nothing. You will get a letter confirming its ok to change to the old plates.

Edit to add--It may cost you to amend your insurance aswell.
  • So just to clarify, the seller would have to pay a £80 fee to transfer the plate onto a new car and we also would have to pay £80 to put the old plate back on?

The seller should have dealt with the retention before selling the car, if you have the V5 for the car, the plate is yours if you wish to sell it or transfer it, anyways it is £80 to transfer or £105 for a retainer certficate, besides you cannot transfer the plate as you have to own both vehicles.

if the log book has been sent away and your waiting for it to comeback in your name.

I personally would contact the person you bought the car from and ask them to pay you £105 and you then will put the plate on rentention for them.

There is only one fee to pay. Unless they have already applied to have the plate removed?, it will get complicated otherwise.

Give them a call to find out the state of play.

Two weeks in theory, at present they are running 6 weeks behind. Even the motor traders are complaining

To the OP, a good point was made earlier in the thread about your insurance company. Many companies now charge an admin fee to change details. £25 and upwards is what you may expect.
  • You can do all this at the local DLVA office if you have one.

I have removed my private plate a few times when changing cars over. The previous posters were correct saying that its £105 in total as a retention certificate will be used. Once this is done you will get a new tax disc and you will receive the original number plate. So you will also need another £20 or so to get some new plates made up. If you are now the owner on the V5c you will have to pay so you will need to get the old owner to pay you back.

In the original post, the old plates are in the car, so £20 saved.
