Your wife is right. You won't find a massive increase in speed going from a celeron to an i3 either so I'd look at the i5. If its for gaming, an SSD for loading/pre fetching textures and a radeon 7750 will give you a good boost (without knowing your PSU specs) and having at least 4gb ram preferably in dual channel mode (2 identical sticks)0
