When they change to charging 5p per carrier bag in the stores, how on earth are they going to sort out the self checkouts?
I usually come away with at least 2 stuck to the last one I remove at sainsburys. They are on those metal weighing rods and just stick together.
How are they going to know how many you have used?

Hi
They will do like they do in Wales at the moment
Ask you if you want a bag/bags and charge you accordingly0 -
In Northern Ireland there are no bags at the self service checkouts.0

I understand that, but without standing next to you at the self service checkouts how are they going to know how many you have used.
If someone uses 5 bags and the screen asks 'How many carrier bags have you used' I expect most will just press 1 rather than add 25p to their bill.
There are 12 self service tills at my Sainsburys, they cant have someone watching every till.0 -
Its just a chance they will have to take. Marks and Spencer's charge for bags and they have an honesty policy at the self service checkouts0

The assistants hand you a bag and scan it into the self-service till for you, usually.0 -
We've had this in Wales for sometime now. When first introduced, our local tesco express removed the carrier bags from the self service check out. You had to ask for a bag, if needed and they would check it was charged correctly. More recently the bags are back on the self serve checkout, and you have to add it yourself to the bill.0

'Most'? Some, no doubt. But for the sake of 25p, I think most people will just answer honestly. Life's too short to lie about a 5p carrier bag, fgs."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I imagine its just the same as when they ask how many apples/bananas you have got. They trust that you will scan every item. If you were to lie it would be stealing. I think they have had items stolen through self service check out, however the loss isn't great enough to validate paying more check out staff and taking away self check outs.I understand that, but without standing next to you at the self service checkouts how are they going to know how many you have used.

They charge for bags in a lot of French supermarkets now and they simply don't provide any bags at the self-checkouts. If you don't have your own, you're basically screwed

I'm more worried about what I'm going to use for poo bags for the cats... I don't want to use a bag that cost 5p every time I pick the lumps out of the kitty litter.
That'll be 10p per day, so £36.50 a year .:hello:0
