You do have a tendency to see ignorance and prejudice where there is none .....

Well, considering you've only been posting here a few weeks (unless you're an AE) then you don't really know anything about me so I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion.

With all due respect not everyone with Bipolar Disorder is the same, there are varying different kinds of this illness!

It is really wrong to make assumptions about the OP and the severity of her condition.

I've been an inpatient in hospital on many occasions for mental health issues and I have seen patients with Bipolar, some are so manic they cannot function and medication makes them worse, or the opposite end of the scale, medication makes them so drowsy they can't move or speak!

Anyone here actually experienced psychiatric drugs and there side effects? (Apart from #4)

It is all about finding the right balance and getting the right medication can take time.

In my local wards there are currently patients with Bipolar that are sectioned and some have been there for 2 years+

I do not have Bipolar myself, but I do have on going mental health issues that requires treatment, intervention, therapy and medication! The drugs I take to keep my sane make me extremely tired, I'm normally in bed by 8pm as I can't keep my eyes open!

Weighing up the pros and cons I would rather take the medication than not, being an inpatient, taking overdoses is no fun I can tell you!

Sadly not all employers accept mental health issues, my previous employer was useless when I became ill, and that was when I worked for the local council!

Yes I know only to well what the side effects are. I have just pulled out one of the many letters from my psychiatrist to the GP and I was prescribed 200mg Amitriptyline & 600mg Lithium Carbonate daily. In addition I was consuming approx. 3 ltrs of cider per night before I went to bed and at weekends topped it up with a bottle of Jamesons.

I was still able to hold down a well paid and stressful job!

It wasn't the mental illness that nearly killed me, it was the alcohol!

I was thinking that too, well spotted.

That poster given that they have been so active since July and have an opinion about others that a new poster couldn't have, I do believe that they he/she is a reincarnation of someone that has been previously banned from this site. Being a new member myself, but a long time lurker is this that chap 'Andy the Troll' that keeps on re-appearing?

I'll keep an eye on him.
  • I'm hoping I'll be fine with my ESA assessment considering I've been sectioned three times alone this year and an currently on a community treatment order.

He may have reached mythic proportions on here but he hasn't gone that far!

(Mind you - there's something very familiar abut your posting style.;))

Not everyone with mental health difficulties abuses alcohol!
  • It's ok saying "take medication to control symptoms" but even that's not as straight forward as it may seem. It's not like taking a pain killer for a headache and it miraculously goes away. There are a vast number of different psychiatric medications and it can often take many years to find the right combination of drugs to successfully manage bipolar disorder.

There are also considerable compliance issues. Many of these drugs have horrendous side effects that can become intolerable to the point you stop taking medication. And then there are the times when between states, hypomanic or manic that you think you no longer need your meds so stop taking them. Obviously the inevitable crash follows so you're back at square one.

So, unless you have direct experience or have suffered yourself please don't make judgements upon what another may or may not be able to do. Bipolar disorder covers a wide spectrum of variations from the milder form of Cyclothymia which, incidently, is the one Stephen Fry suffers with, to the more extreme manic Bipolar I disorder. No two people will share exactly the same experience and many will also have co-morbid conditions such as drug/alcohol addiction, anxiety disorders and even personality disorders. Some cases of BD are even misdiagnosed personality disorders. One in particular is Borderline Personality Disorder or Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder as it's often referred to these days. There is also a much higher incidence of suicide with Bipolar Disorder and life expectancy is far lower than someone without a mental illness.

Those who are quick to judge really do have no idea of the impact this serious mental illness has upon a person, as well as their family and friends. Assuming they've actually got any family or friends left to support them due to the destructive nature of this illness.

    Very well put! :T

Even that is not a guarantee you will get it! A friend was the same, and she was placed in the WRAG group! Of course she is in the process of appealing!
