So how come that one is ok and doing well but people think the one I found is dodgy? I'm totally confused now.

No one said this one is ok - it does seem exactly the same so I think everyones opinions on this thread still apply, personally.

She's a one man band who has been doing it for a year!

The £150 is the franchise license and the £30, I'm not 100% sure about.

It wouldn't really be competing with the woman selling the franchise because, if I did it, I wouldn't be in the same area as her, nobody would, we would all have our own areas. I'd be miles away in a different county.

I'm assuming it would be like her being the area manager and having people report to her?
So on top of everything else, you have a commute to make?
What exactly is she franchising? It all sounds very vague.

So what do you get for your £150 fee?

What is to stop you forming your own networking group and saving yourself the payment?

Tbh I know the figures differ... but I wonder if this is just all a ploy to advertise that link.

. I do hope your not suggesting I am part of some attempt to promote an opportunity here, your notice the original link I posted goes to to a number of different similar franchises nothing specific.

I didn't realise that she had got the link from you in the first place, makes sense now why she was saying 'people are saying that one is ok'

    My mistake.

  • I don't usually do this but I have looked through your posts here.
First of all- the franchise you said was similar was looking as far as I can see for successful business people to run them.
I have a feeling that this is desperation that is making you look at franchises and this is not the best reason to go into a franchise. So many people have lost thousands by committing to a franchise- even the most well known ones- for instance I was reading about women who took on Rosemary Connelly and have had to downsize/sell cars etc. I really can't see what this woman has that is any way unique and can't be copied by someone else. So even if you were successful to begin with, someone will see an opening for them and move in.
Earlier this month you said you had looked at taking on cleaning jobs. You also said that you had no office skills at all and were not very computer literate. I just think you would be out of your depth.
But I am not saying this to kick you when you are down. I just think its better to be blunt to stop you getting hurt in the long run.
I do have a suggestion though. I see you do dressmaking. Fewer and fewer folks now can be bothered to do alterations such as taking hems up. Why not look at starting up doing that? Is your village like a lot of others where there is potential to rent out a room in an already established business? I can think for instance of the beauty salon near me which has had to let go of a couple of beauticians and their rooms are not being used now. There must be countless other opportunities where you can negotiate a reasonable rental- even short term until you see if your business could take off. Of course, I am not sure how rural you actually are so you might be able to advertise from your own home? I just think that if you want to start a business it would make sense to start one you actually know something about.

No commute, I live in a different county than she does.

It's highly unlikely I'm going to go for it after taking into consideration the points raised in this thread.

    I appreciate your advice :)

As for dressmaking, I am at a very basic level, I do it just for me and my kids, it doesn't matter if the hems are wonky and a sleeve badly set if it's just for us, I could never charge money for it and I certainly can't do alterations, that is something on a whole different level, my partner's mother does alterations and she is extremely talented and it's taking her a good while to get established. I couldn't compete with her.

I get the feeling there aren't many options left for me really are there? Maybe I just have to resign myself to the fact that at 41 and a lone parent I am in fact completely unemployable.

I rue the day I ever decided to do the 'right thing' and become a stay at home mum, I should have packed my kids off to day care and built myself an amazing career because raising a family on £72 a week Widowed Parents Allowance for the rest of my life doesn't seem like much of a reward for deciding to raise my children myself.
