She is required to attend school next year, she's the first year where they don't finish at 16 anymore.
I had better check with her school, their website gives no information.
This year (2013) is the first year that children have to stay in some form of education until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17. This does not have to be school and can be full time study at school or college or working with part time education or training. Although they have to stay in some form of education in our area, a place on a lot of courses and apprenticeships was dependant on certain GCSE results so students could not start courses until after GCSE results. For example to do an A level in a specfic subject in sixth form you had to have achieved at least a B grade at GCSE and at least a C grade in English and Maths.
Schools and colleges had an enrolment day after GCSE results. Children who did not receive the results they had hoped for were offered alternative courses. My daughter has stayed on in sixth form at the secondary school she has attended but she had to get the GCSE results this August to do so.0
