Some good posts you have made and nice pictures too. All the best at your allotment.

I got my first allotment today, so keen to get going too.

Nice tip with the tyres. I worked overseas a few years ago, in Africa and tyres there have various uses. They are used for growing, but are also used for the stabilization of slopes.

    Regards !

  • The rocket is coming on a dream in the poly tunnel now, and it looks like the herb cuttings that Dad gave me are taking nicely...

I've picked the first bunches of mint for some lovely Moroccan mint tea - our first allotment produce!!

Making good progress now. Can't wait to start on the veg!

I need to acquire some manure to dig into what will be the veg growing portion of the plot now - any ideas??
I'm hoping to do this over the winter ready to get planting come the spring!!

  • Can't beat a cup of mint tea with fresh mint I had lots in summer also did the same with lemon balm. We just got some bags of soil conditioner from Aldi in Spring and used that on our plot and started growing things straight away. Our soil is very heavy & clayey!Experience will tell you what grows best in your area (& looking at the other allotments)Perhaps there is someone experienced who gardens near you on the same soil type to get some tips from.A lot of people are only too pleased to help the younger generation who show an interest they like to pass on their knowledge. As ours was a shady plot the pumpkin died -what with the shade & the slugs it didn't have a chance! Shame- it was my 7 years olds .I shall have to buy him a Halloween pumpkin now! Loving your shed .What a lovely thing to shelter in if you have a spot of rain! Looks like youve really got the bug now.Your friends will be laughing on the other side of their faces when youre eating all your fresh healthy vegetables, looking slim & fit from all the outdoor exercise you're having.
    All the best, Cally
  • Ask around on the plot. There will most likely be a farm/ stables that leave out their manure for peole to collect. Someone will know where to go! Sometimes the council/ plot will organise a manure delivery a couple of times a year. Also check out your local council's recycling info. My council does it's own compost from garden waste recycled. We are allowed to take 3 bags (bring your own bags) every time you make a trip to the tip/ recycling centre. I love the trips to the tip, as much to my other half's embarrassement, I often run after people throwing away useful stuff! You never know what you're going to find.
  • Thanks guys, appreciate the tips!! :)

I've found a little farm not far from the plot to get the manure... fab!!
Will have to try and crack on with that in the next few weeks now.

Time to start planning what to grow and how to lay out the vegetable plot now!!
