Driving someone else's child

Hi all. Will keep this short.

I work for myself etc .... A lady had contacted me and asked if I will drive her child to school, collect and bring back everyday.
Now I'm insured etc for everything I do but this I am not.

Can someone clarify that I would need a specific insurance or permit as I'm acting like a taxi service?? I have no idea, and before I meet with her I need to make sure that I'm not breaking the law. I'm assuming that I would need something, so i need to know before I turn it down or not.

Anyway thanks all in advance.

Depends if you are getting paid or not.

Best thing is to contact your insurance company direct to ask

Irrespective of the insurance. That's a lot of regular responsibility you'll have on your shoulders for the Child's safety & wellbeing.

Thanks. I finally got through to the council. Anyone else who wishes to know the answer:

    Thanks again

Some taxi firms have contracts with the LEA for this so their drivers are police checked. I would suggest she found a local firm and used them.

Depending on the age/height of the child you may need a car seat:

Thats a shock, another tax grab, in the not so distant future they'll take all our money direct from source and hand us a bit of pocket change if we're lucky.

I suspect getting this licence involves a CRB check too, did they give an idea of cost?

If the lady is a friend or relative you don't need any special licence as long as you are not doing it for profit.

OP, could you answer the question posted earlier? Are you a family friend of the lady in question and simply doing her a favour or are you doing this for payment?

Not really, all taxi drivers (private and public hire) rightfully should be licensed by their local council - and this should most certainly involve a DBS check, especially where you are transporting children and potentially vulnerable persons.

The insurance you would need if you are being paid for transporting the children is Hire & Reward - and it is not cheap! It's not unknown for premiums to be in the region of £2-£5k depending on your driving history.

For licensing you can often expect to pay over £50 for the CRB, about £10-£15 for DVLA check, £50+ application/renewal for the license. More or less depending on your area.

I'm not a friend or relative. She approached me because I'm trust worthy :0).

I'm not going to go down that route, I've already explained this to her. I just wasn't sure what license/insurance I would of needed if any etc. but it's more than my job/reputation is worth.
Thanks all for your responses, hopefully these posts will help others now if they was enquiring about the same the thing.
    Thanks once again
