Sky are hardly "screwing" anyone for anything; wi-fi is an added extra for the On Demand service which has only recently launched. Only those not currently connected to On Demand are offered the connector free since it is assumed that those already using the service have already connected. I'd say it was a pretty safe assumption.
Personally, I use Homeplugs to connect my Sky+HD to the internet and I wouldn't use Sky's connector even if they did give it to me for free.
We were already connected to on demand and we received the free wifi box so only being offered to new on demand users is incorrect.0 -
Since the free offer is only for those who have not previously connected to On Demand (and clearly states so on Sky's website) please don't post such inaccuracies. We were already connected to on demand and we received the free wifi box so only being offered to new on demand users is incorrect.0 -

Thanks everyone.
Have a Wi-Fi range extender with an ethernet port, so should do the work (in place of on demand connector) if the Sky+ box they ship doesn't come with built in Wi-Fi capability.
I have only used Sky Go and that too before Sky launched "Sky Go extra", never used "on demand" so I guess I should be eligible for a free on demand connector (if the offer remains available). If not, the range extender seems just fine for the purpose.0
