I meet people of very modest means such as a young electrician who has saved hard and made sacrifices and is now moving into his new home. He plans to let it out asap and buy his next one and be a boomer one day.

He thinks that buying and letting property will enable him to change his date of birth?? Boomers are those born between 1946 and 1964 - the years of the "baby boom". (Actually those are the years of the US baby boom. In this country, there was only a brief spike in the birth rate in 1946ish, followed by a later boom peaking in about 1964 and continuing all the way to the early 1970s.)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

  • The time of leaving school at 15 and finding a trade to work in for decades is long gone.

The apprentice roles and the semi skilled positions have vanished, to be replaced by temping and short contracts in the service economy.

Young people graduating with Media degrees because they dont have any great aptitude for science or technology, that you all sneer at, are no different to a boomer school leaver at 15 without any particular skills but who got a decent trade in retail, secretarial areas, or construction, within commuting distance of their homes.

If those jobs still existed people would do them. But they dont. What we have is service sector jobs in London or other expensive parts of the SE with workers in their 30s doing flat shares.

This is the world that boomers have created.

I have a friend who is a builder. He would like to take on an assistant who could help with some of the less skilled tasks, while being trained up to learn to do the harder stuff. He has had several, but none of them seems to have understood the importance of consistently showing up on time, concentrating on the job in hand, and not getting onto their mobile phones every time his back is turned. He's regretfully decided to stop looking for somebody to train to become a proper builder like him (other than maybe his son), and just take on a minimum wage grunt to fetch and carry and hold the other end of stuff. :(

How odd, there are hundreds of young trades people in my area. The plastering apprentice, the trainee tiller, the apprentice plumber, the lads at the firm near mine learning to be electricians in a firm that installs energy saving regimes into Banks (for example movement sensitive lighting switches in corridors) and so on.

I expect their parents are generation x.

The very youngest boomers are around 50 now.....so it's more than likely your 16 or 17 year old apprentice is the offspring of gen xi parents......

Indeed. In contrast to my recent post, I should add that the two apprentices on the team that installed my solar panels seemed to be getting on fine. One was particularly keen and had an electronics text book that he was cramming from whenever the actual work got a bit slow. Maybe that kind of technology seems more exciting and attracts a better quality of apprentice than general building does.

We know a young lad who is almost 18 and keeps walking out of jobs.....he doesn't like being told what to do. However his parents give him money and keep his car on the road.......he is the boyfriend of the neighbour's daughter.

And our neighbour's daughters was the same.....they stopped supporting her - and funnily enough she's working now. She was 17 in March.

I did read something about youngster not knowing how to behave at work and that they might have to be taught in schools.
  • the youth of today are useless. i just looked at a test to get into one of the best selective schools. granted, it is for 11 year olds, but it took me less than 30 seconds to get 100% in maths and english. surely if this selective school wants the best kids it should be a little bit harder!! you have £2 and spend £1.43. how much change will you get??? come on!!

...... you have £2 and spend £1.43. how much change will you get??? come on!!

Easy for you and me, but this is extremely difficult for the 'yoof'.

For two generations, now, there has been no concept of spending less than you have. If you have £2, then you must spend £2. Or more if possible.

If the question had been "You borrow £150 from Wonga. How much do you pay back in 28 days?"..........
