Food and living alone

I love Brains Faggots. Though, supermarkets always do promotions on the 6 pack. For example at the moment, Iceland have them at 87p and the packs of 2 - £1.

It is very difficult to divide the pack into 2 or 3 as the faggots are not evenly distributed in the foil tray and sometimes cannot see them at all. Once I ate all 6 and was feeling very full afterwards

None of the local butchers sells faggots.

I like cabbage, but if I buy one, I eat it for 5 days and I get bored of it.

Anyone else that lives alone - what products don't you buy?

I always buy the normal size tins and either put half in a plastic pot or make two meals at a time.

I dont buy a lot of bread although I do have a freezer now, didnt used to.

Dont buy many tins or packet food anyway and if I make too much of something or have spare food left over I'll pass it my mums way

I make a lot of soup with leftovers.
  • I know the feeling. Can't you buy unprepared faggots? (Try posting that question on an American forum. :D )

It's not the answer to everything but as pauline said 'the freezer is your friend'.

I buy the faggots sometimes, there are two of us. I buy 2 packs of 6 and cut off 2 from each with a very sharp knife dipped in boiling water. As you said, it's not foolproof as you can't see where the faggots start and gravy ends.;) Some portions will be bigger than others but I'd rather take that than pay full price.

For vegetables, I think you'll have to go to a local greengrocer (or Lidl) where you can buy only what you need. The alternative is frozen. That won't help with cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli, although you can buy frozen I'm not sure how good it is.

I don't understand someone thinking they have to eat everything by X date? Just freeze what you don't need. There is very little that can't be frozen either in its raw state or cooked and that includes most fruit and vegetables.

I have frozen crumpets and bread as I imagine most people have so to be honest not sure what the problem is unless you don't have a freezer and that is not really anything to do with how many people are in the household.

I don't eat faggots but I assume that they are some sort of meatball in a sauce that once cooked then cannot be refrozen? I wonder if you would be able to slightly defrost just enough to remove the excess faggots out and put them back in the freezer?

Good advice, even with a cabbage though, it take little effort to finish half of one in a few days and even if it meant having to chuck away half because they did not want to freeze it, it's only 30p or so going in the bin. I would not restrict my diet for the sake of 30p.

What does studio room mean? Is it like a bedsit?

All the shared flats I have lived in have had 1 or 2 fridge / freezers, but even then depending on how many live in the flat depends on how much freezer space you get. It helps if you live with people who are friends and you like cooking together and share food, washing powder etc.

I am really sick of things going bad in the fridge. I'm never sure when to throw out pesto and other such things that say once opened refrigerate and eat within 72 hours. I keep them and use them for longer but how long is still safe?

I like beetroot as you can keep it in the fridge for months.

I eat a lot of tinned food, chick peas, other beans, tinned vegetables, tinned lentils.

You need a flatmate who shares your love of faggots.Did you realise that faggots now contain palm oil and recovered meat products making them one of the most fattening foods on the market? The Chinese import 35pc of UK faggot production using them as dim sum

    Yes, why wouldn't they ?
  • difficult but a couple of suggestions
re the faggots could you cook the whole 6 put half on a plate in the fridge and warm up in a couple of days ?

re cabbage if you have acess to a market you can pick up bowls with say a cabbage carrots and some broccoli in it....for 33p i would use the cabbage once or twice and chuck the rest guilt free...sorry if that offends anyone

    hth
ps did you say you had a freezer because that would help with bread
    onwards and upwards
