There is only so much land you can grow food or rear animalson.
The population is getting bigger, both in UK and also Europe.
There are bigger markets than just home markets created in last 10/15 years.
New class of wealth in Asia and the Far East demanding western style foods.
The whole making things smaller is to fit the price point of a certain product.
If we have been used to paying a £1.00 for a loaf of bread 800gms then we now pay £1.00 for 700 gms how much of the bread buying population notice that ? Less than 1% ?
In the UK most foods are still considerably cheaper than European or even American food stores.
I am sure many many run very very tight budgets, just going to have to become meal planning savvy and cut out ANY food wastage at all.

We have bought the 500g tins of Homepride curry sauce for many many years and have seen the price steadily increase to £1.55 a tin.
Now we have noticed that all the big supermarkets, Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose etc no longer have the 500g can in stock. They are all 400 g and are being sold at the same price ie £1.55

That is effectively a 20% price increase.

And 400g is not enough for two hearty eaters!!

Yes another item to add to the list of other items gone down in size, 2 options buy 2 tins or make your own sauce.

Slice an onion (15p), fry it.
Add 2 tbsp curry powder (or a decent curry spice mix) (25p.)
    Add your meat.
Add a tin of chopped tomatoes. (35p)

That'll give you 500g of ingredients and a better outcome.
2 mins to chop the onoin, 5 mins to fry it.

80p saved for 7 mins work. Not hue, but probably satisfying to flick the v's at homepride?

The 500g jars are still available (£1.45 in Tesco, 2 for £3 in Asda). There's also currently offers on the 400g tins - £1 each in Sainsbury, 3 for £3.50 in Tesco.

the manufacturers hoping that most people won't notice.

And it's the principle behind it that's wrong. Historically, prices have risen as time has passed and inflation has come into play. Prices SHOULD rise over time. But this new product shrinking phenomenon seems to be a new thing to con people into believing prices have not gone up. It's a massive con and so typical of today's cynical, dishonest world. I hate it with a passion.

I can remember Cadbury's Flakes being absolutely gigantic when I was young. If they shrink any further, they'll be the size of the ones you stick in a 99 ice cream. Absolutely shameful.
I have been seeing similar opinions being aired on cadbury's facebook site where people have been questioning this tactic. They have all got the same reply from Cadbury's uk:

Cadbury UK Hi xxxx, we’ve had to take the decision to reduce the overall weight of our multipacks due to a number of economic factors. One of which being the cost of our ingredients that make our chocolate so delicious. You’ll be pleased to know though that this means we can keep the recommended retail price as it is. Hope that eases your mind.
    "
So they admit the downsizing but seem to think we should give them credit for only increasing the cost per unit. Sadly too many people fall for this which is why they can get away with it.

It isn't just the bar size shrinking - three- rather than four-packs are now popping up elsewhere than pound shops. So that is an additional increase on top.

Yeah I have been banging on about this as well. Wispa(which I have boycotted ever since they started their deception) used to have a 4 bar pack which totted up to a total of about 160g and these could be easily picked up for a quid. Now the pound shops are selling 3 of the smaller bar packs for the same price so where you could get 160g, you can now get only 90g. For this deceit, Cadburys are looking for credit because they did not raise the price:mad:
