  • You enjoy your job AND you are so kind as to benefit tons of other people when you could just sit on unused cash gaining interest.
Don't listen to your colleagues! They're clearly jealous. You don't tell them how to spend their wages I'm sure, and at least you are doing well with it - not wasting it on 2-minute luxuries, gambling, etc.

Absolutely not. The lack of jobs is caused by many things and having a job is well down on the list. A large number of jobs go to immigrants amd some people prefer to live on benefits. These two things need sorting first before those in jobs that they don't need are put in the spotlight

OH my god are you actually kidding me?! How is people from other countries working in Britain related to a man giving away his wages. Someone has issues here and this is NOT the place to air them. Imbecile.
  • I don't think positions should be created that don't include a living wage, and so I would argue that all jobs should come with a salary and it's entirely up to the individual what they choose to do with it.

There are currently campaigns running to stop unpaid internships etc in academia and charities, because if there is no salary then ONLY the people with independent means can take those jobs and get the relevant experience - and that completely detours recruiting the most capable people and allowing fair access to the field. So I think even if you did work for charity you should still have a fair wage and the choice of whether you needed it to live on or could afford to donate it.

Oh and of course, it should be nobody else's business which you choose.

  • What about the thousands of people who earn millions a year and large business owners? Do there colleagues/ employees tell them they should give up work as they financially no longer need to earn? As many people have already pointed out working is not about your salary it is about what you get intrinsically. I think it is very kind of you to donate your salary.
  • I have come across many people out there who don't need to work yet do so for many reasons such as socially, to keep an active role in the community or even to learn new skills..there are more reasons. Your colleagues should not judge you for wishing to take on an employment role only to give your entire salary away. It is entirely up to you what your readons are for doing so and who is to say that should you quit your position at the company you work for, that your employer will replace you anyway?
If you want to leave, do so because the time is right for you to move on, but if you really are fortunate enough to be able to afford not to earn a salary, perhaps helping charities out in terms of becoming a volunteer would be just as apreciated as a monthly cash donation, or set up your own company and employ others, using a portion or all of the profits made towards donating to your favourite charity. That way you'll be helping more than just a charity
  • wow this is amazing, how rude of people to tell you what to do.. I am sure some people how ever much money they had would still not give it to charity.. work is good for the soul,, leave the jealous people to be jealous:rotfl::T
  • First, by the sound of it your payroll department have breached a whole bunch of data protection and privacy controls. If you feel strongly about this, I imagine you have a strong case legally to seek compensation. Which I guess would go to charity!
Having been out of regular employment for some months but not desperate for money, I can tell you that not working is corrosive and demoralising.
How infuriating it must be to have made your position so difficult because of this action by your colleagues. It's deeply unprofessional that any aspect of pay and conditions be revealed. I don't know if its technically illegal, but your rights have been violated and you have my sympathy.
Work is about so much more than a wage (sorry if that sounds a bit inappropriate in difficult economic times) - being in a sociable environment, a sense of meaning and purpose, doing something you clearly enjoy, making the time away from work valuable and feeling you are making a contribution to society.
Incidentally, does this mean your salary is passed to charlity with no tax or NI withheld?

Your HR department deserve a talking to for letting confidential information slip. If you like your job you should stick to it, otherwise find a company that appreciates you. I would work even if financially secure because the life skills and work experience are paramount to credentialising yourself in future endeavours. Your work colleagues should be ashamed of themselves for bullying you this way, money isn't everything and I wonder how many of them donate time to mentoring or supporting people looking for work!
  • Hi there - what you are doing is so commendable and I just wish I was in a position to do the same.

Even if you were keeping your earnings despite not needing them, it's really no-one else's business at all. In fact, the payroll dept should be disciplined for such a serious breach of confidentiality.

I read a comment saying that you giving up your job will hardly sort out the crisis and, of course, that's quite correct. The fact that you give away your earnings is so generous and well above and beyond what most people would do, regardless of whether they need the money or not.

I really hope your colleagues see the good that you're doing. Stand your ground; keep doing what you enjoy doing and sod what anyone else says - they're probably jealous anyway! All credit to you :T

I definitely agree with the majority of these posts - work is about more than just the salary, and it is admirable that you are giving your wages to charity. It never hurts to have a solid income and a strong work ethic - there are some out there who would not bother, and if the worst happened and they lost their income, they would have no experience or anything to build upon.

However, it's unfortunate that your colleagues know about this now. If your company has to go through a cost saving exercise in the future by making people redundant, you're probably going to be hit with a wave of judgement if you keep a job you don't financially need, while a colleague loses their only income source. While I think it would be unfair, just be prepared that it might happen.
