Santander 123 Account

To be fair, they do explain it all in their online banking FAQs, where they unsurprisingly contend that their way is best! What is OTP?
One Time Passcode (referred to as 'OTP') is one of our security measures. It's only used for setting up new payment instructions (for the first time only), or changing important information (like your contact details). It's great, because you only need to register a mobile phone number with us to use it - and you don't need to remember any new passwords.
How do I use One Time Passcode if I do not have a mobile phone?
Unfortunately without registering a mobile phone for OTP you will be not be able to use One Time Passcode. This means that you won't be able to carry out certain high security transactions, such as paying a new recipient, changing your address or ordering a new debit card PIN within Online Banking.
You will still be able to check your balances, transfer money between your accounts, pay people you've already paid before and set up email alerts.
If you need to set up a new payee or amend a Standing Order then you can still complete these types of transactions using our Telephone Banking service or going into your nearest branch.
OTP is one of the security measures we use as part of the Santander Online Banking Service.
Why do you use OTPs instead of card readers?
Some UK financial companies use card readers to generate passcodes for customers performing high-risk transactions. For your convenience, we use your mobile phone instead, so you don't need to carry around an additional device.0 -
If you want a card reader, there are at least half a dozen accounts that you can have. Just switch your account and you'll get a card reader.
He would like to be able to operate a Santander account (3% interest) with a card reader instead of a mobile.
So would I.
As for setting up payments by phone - I've tried. The staff are poorly trained and babble on about codes and mobile phones! It's a real hassle each time persuading them how to do their job! Plus it converts internet banking into telephone banking.
I accept that this is how Santander chooses to operate, but my original post was simply to a) vent spleen! and b) feedback (one) customer's negative experience.0 -
I for one am delighted that I don't need a card reader for Santander, Lloyds, HBOS and TSB. I hope they never force their customers down that path.
Given that there are now about 75m mobiles phones for a population of 65m, it is hardly unreasonable for a company to use telephone technology rather than expect their customers to acquire yet another gadget.0 -
I don't think freepost wanted a card reader just for the sake of having one!

I have both.
Personally I prefer the card reader as I can't always remember where I put my mobile plus I can't always get a signal..
Simple to use. Most of my transactions are done at one desk so it is readily to hand.
It makes logging in a bit easier too, the three memorable pieces of data for Santander can be a bit of a handful.
I have card readers with two banks and the readers are interchangeable."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

A number of banks allow both systems to be used simultaneously but Santander is the first bank that I have come across that insists that a mobile is used with Internet Banking ... very strange. I wonder if its the same in Spain.
Also, you mentioned Lloyds, HBOS and TSB, you will be aware that none of these banks require the use of a mobile to further an internet transaction.:)

This is what gets me about First Direct.
Several banks use card readers.
Certain banks do voice calls.
Certain banks and websites send text messages.
First Direct decide to require you to download an app to your phone to generate a one time number. Why not just send a text message or do a voice call?
Certainly the platypus bank "That does things a little differently".
[Yes, they'll send you out a secure key if you prefer]0 -
My Santander 123 account opened on 16th Sept. Transferred the main utility Direct Debits and transferred my balance, can anyone advise me if the interest on the savings is paid monthly or just the cashback on the direct debits and what date would this be paid.
Thanks0 -
