Good for those who travel off peak and plan well in advance for their hand luggage only trips.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

If a flight has only one piece of check-in luggage, you will still need to pay for luggage handlers.
Just weigh the customers and add the luggage weight to give a total allowance. E.g. Economy gets 100 kg per person, business class gets 120kg. You then charge say £1 per kg overweight supplement. Longer flights more , of course.
If I was the Health Minister, that's all I have to do to make the nation shed a million tonne of lard.0 -

To accomodate the extra weight of the corporate fat-cats?
Regarding the whole charge passengers by weight idea. While I personally agree (I'm 70kg wet through) it is not something that is going to happen in Europe any time soon. Can you imagine the outrage...the claims of infringement of human rights....blah blah blah.
Anyway, I welcome this from BA. It is clearly an attempt to challenge the (often incorrect) view that they must be more expensive than budget carriers like EasyJet and RyanAir. I think many people don't even bother checking with BA, they just assume low-cost carriers will be cheaper.
All in all though, if you actually work out all the extra charges I often find there is little difference. Especially when you consider the less obvious expenses such as actually getting to where you want to be from the RyanAir-served dirt runway in the middle of nowhere. I fell foul of this recently when I took a flight to the rather ambitiously named Dusseldorf Weeze airport in Germany. The !!!!ing thing is 70Km (!) from Dusseldorf and if I had actually researched properly before taking the flight I would have noticed (on google maps) that the end of the runway is practically in Holland! (I kid you not, it's about 500m from the border!)
Once you have paid for inconvenient transfer to where you're going, not to mention he less tangible cost to your time and convenience, RyanAir looks like less and less of a bargain.
I guess if they serve an airport that is conveniently located for you and you can definitely meet their draconian carry-on luggage limits then you might save some money. But how do you value your dignity?0 -
Thunderbird II has already show us the way.
Standardise planes and passenger containers.
Get the passengers to load their own luggage like getting on an airbus coach, with a luggage handler to supervise and tighten up.
For primitive airports, a truck drags the container to the Thunderbird for docking, but with a custom made airport, you would just use the classic conveyor belt set up.
This will improve turn-over, and it is possible to share back up Thunderbirds between airlines.
The container concept also makes it possible to eject the whole module. The container can have air bags for ground impact, and flotation in water. With sufficient altitude, parachutes can be deployed.0 -

No, the people that don't even bother checking with BA are those that do not live near London - it is known as London Airways for good reason!0 -
I live 15mins from Heathrow. I can't bring myself to fly with anyone else other than BA. It's too convenient. Bus from outside my house straight to Terminal 5 lol. Might be more expensive flights but saves me paying petrol and car parking charges elsewhere.
If I lived in Essex I'm sure I would fly RyanAir a lot more. Is a matter of convenience and jacques chirac is absolutely right.0
