Carney printing more money

Literally.
Smaller, wipe-clean plastic banknotes could be introduced by the Bank of England from 2016, matching currency across the world.

The new polymer notes stay cleaner, are more secure and should even survive a spell in the washing machine, the Bank says.

It has spent three years studying the impacts of a change from cotton paper.

The switch could start with the new £5 note, featuring Sir Winston Churchill, with the £10 note to follow.

The Bank has organised a roadshow to gauge public opinion across the UK over the next two months before coming to a final decision in December.

All I hope is that we can trust him not to slip in 'a few extra' at launch in a clandestine QE program. Charlie Bean reckons the longer life will make them cheaper to produce, but maybe he expects hyper-inflation and is trying to keep costs down when everyone's screaming for £500 notes to buy the daily newspaper.

When confronted with beggars in the street, it is good fun to stand in front of the beggar and light a cigar with a fiver. I suppose this will lose some attraction now. Just make a nasty smell and spill hot molten plastic over his shoes (if he has any).

Why does the word for 'one who begs' end in 'ar'? Most words like that end in 'er' (scrounger, !!!!!!, winner, loser, etcetera etcetera)

Plastic notes are fab. I hope we go with them. Eamonn Holmes said on Sky this am that they are already in use in NI, so why not the rest of the UK?

Besides, it will give new meaning to 'sticking it on plastic'.

Something to do with deriving from an old French word "Begart", meaning 'Mendicant'. At the time, a Mendicant was a member of several orders of friars that originally forbade ownership of property, subsisting mostly on alms. i.e. a renter on benefits.

    Sounds familiar....

It doesn't matter what they make them out of; they will never be as durable, divisible or convenient as Bitcoin.

And this time next year you will need more of them to buy bitcoins so they are also a poorer store of value.

If that's true what possessed you to buy a coffee with bitcoin instead of sterling?

Out of interest; in the anti fiat community is there a sub argument happening about the relative merits of PM's vs Bitcoin.

    .

Why does the cafe sell coffee in sterling today if they can get more for their coffee next year?

    ..... Yes

Bitcoin is often described as "digital gold" and the general consensus is that they are complimentary.

I can understand why the cafe would do it (bitcoin can 'only' increase in value).

Hasn't the cafe done you over by persuading you to part with your bitcoin?

Didn't you have any fiat currency on you? From what you say the wise would use sterling to pay for stuff but the foolish use bitcoin to buy stuff.

I am a supporter of the Bitcoin economy so like to spend at Bitcoin-friendly retailers

It's just like any economy; earn some, save some, spend some.
Only it's nice to know that if you do save, your money is not losing value.
