Porting vs Migration

I believe that you cannot go from one e.g. O2 contract to another O2 contract, but have heard recently about something called migration.

Please could someone explain the difference to me? If it is not possible to port within the same network is it possible to migrate? If not can you go from an O2 online contract to a CPW-O2 contract and if so would that be classed as porting or migrating?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

MNP (Mobile Number Portability) allows you to transfer your number to another service provider regardless of whether you are changing network operator.

Changing network operator and service provider is known as porting. Changing service provider but remaining with the same network operator is generally known as migration.

In your example O2 online and O2 CPW are different service providers (as is O2 offline). Under MNP rules numbers can be ported between these service providers.

Note however that the commission a dealer earns on a migration is considerably less than for a new network connection. As a result most, if not all, dealers do not facilitate migrations.
