Access to the national index of BMD is free everywhere, not just the local library.

Some local libraries have free access to ancestry.

We had fun and games trying to trace my OH's BM as her maiden name was Jones but got there with a mix of ancestry, genesreunited.com and BMD and a bit of luck on 192.com so it *is* possible.

Another source would be to see if there are any family history groups local to you- or if you have an LDS church nearby with a Family History Centre they will help you research (they'll also invite you to church but if you refuse nicely won't push it)

  • Does anyone know how I could trace a Great Aunt who left for Australia in 1958? All I know is her name (maiden & first Husbands surnames but not second Hubby's surname) & date of birth, where they left from & the date & where they went to & their 2 childrens names & dob's but as both were girls they may have changed surnames. The Hubby has now died that I do know but I don't know who she remarried & we're desperate to find her, or her Daughters as she may well have died now

It should be easy enough to find her second marriage in the records - https://www.freebmd.org.uk/.

There are a lot of passenger lists available on the web, too.

Thanks, I just tried that link but it seems to only search the UK? I have the record from when they left the UK in 1958 but nothing from when they got to Australia other than Hubby #1 seems to have died in 1998

. Apart from their names approximate location (from 27years ago) and the place of employment of an auntie which looks to be about 5years ago according to fr.

A long shot but try writing to your aunty's place of employment, payroll department if they have one. Enclose a letter for your aunty in a stamped envelope and ask if they would be kind enough to forward the letter to your aunty as you don't have her address. You might be lucky. One place I worked at the payroll department would forward letters if asked 'nicely' although wouldn't give out details. Do not demand they do it!

I had thought about that but was worried it might look stalkerish.

Do you mean that your aunt and her first husband emigrated to Australia and that she remarried out there?
