system flush

Is the argument about the need for a system flush, power flush or the ridiculous amount being charged to do it. There may be a need to flush out a system but why has it now become a requirement for a "powerflush" - basically because it can be charged as a premium service and its become a nice earner for those that offer it - especially BG who have been taking the P for years.
Even if it took a whole eight hour day to carry out the work, charging £700-£750 is taking the mickey. There are plenty of firms about who will do it for £200-£250 or you could hire the unit for £50-£100 and do it yourself.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
update,,they have now decided, tat air is being drawn into the system, they are going to fit something, that will eliminate air getting in system,,plumber did still mention a power flush as water black, and he thinks that might not be helping0

Rather than a power flush, try disconnecting it from the boiler - adding a hosepipe to the return pipe - put it down t'drain and a hose pipe to the flow pipe and attach that to your garden tap.
Turn off all rads and flush the pipes, then turn on one rad at a time.
That will give you a bit of a flush, but because your only using mains pressure ts not going to be that good - it will however get a lot of crud out.
Rent a machine from a hire store and you may be able to improve on that.
There are ISTR chemicals that you can add to the system a few weeks before a flush to release all the crud when you flush to improve things.
Think along the lines of those adverts we have seen on telly for blocked arteries and how they restrict blood flow etc - the same can apply to your heating system.
Putting cruddy water with bits in, sludge etc all into your nice new combi boiler just cannot be good for it - it too will start to crud up and become inefficient.
As much as I too would not pay out so much for one I would not just sit there saying that a flush does nothing to the system - certainly not when the rest of the system can be 20+ years old.0 -

From HSS the machine is about 135 quid for the weekend plus another 40 for the chemicals so I guess you add another 300 labour for a person who knows what they are doing and thats the cost of the job 475 inc vat. I imagine bg value the lifetime guarantee at the extra 220 inc vat.0 -
Didn't notice anyone recommending the Magno filter??? added to the system.
Our old back boiler ran well for 40 years but I thought we'd now get a new one as it couldn't last much longer and might 'break' at the wrong time.
The installerflushed the system using one of the filters and I was or maybe wasn't surpised to see how much rubbish came out.
He then installed one of the filters into the system which will require cleaning annually when he comes along to do the maintennace.
That will cost £40 but that looks ok to me and I'm a tight git.
BTW our old system was never maintained not once.
Never had a leak either water or gas and he told us the gas flame was still burning at its optimum.
He also said the new system would be lucky to last 15 years:DIt's your money. Except if it's the governments.0
