Unfair winnings

Hi guys

Need your advice please

At work we had a competition on "who can guess the baby weight" on a lady who's just had a baby. We made a spreadsheet so everybody paid to guess, only some people haven't yet paid. She's now had the baby, but the person who guessed it right hasn't paid.

Am I right in just giving the winnings to the next person?

I honestly don't think it's fair for this person to win, as they aren't likely to pay up now they've lost.

Thanks

  • I think it would be fair to exclude all of those who havent paid ( unless of course the spread sheet was set up this week and people havent had chance to pay iyswim?

So, assuming people have had plenty of time to pay then, exclude them and pay out to the next closest guess

Yes, no money no winnings, they weren't in the competition. I couldn't write some numbers on a lottery ticket and try to claim the winnings if I hadn't paid to enter could I?

If no-one knows (or only a couple of you know) the weight I would give them all 24 hours to pay and the winner will be announced the following day.
warn them all that if they dont pay in that timeframe and they guessed correctly they will not win and it will be passed to the next closest guess.
  • Thanks all.

The spreadsheet has been around for months, so plenty of time to pay a measly £1. And the weight has just been emailed to everybody so everybody knows.

The guy who has 'won' will inevitably now pay, because he's won. But only because of that; so I won't mail out asking for this payment.

You should be consistent though, and not mail out asking for any payments from anyone else who entered and didn't pay. If people who didn't pay aren't eligible to win then they shouldn't be asked to pay.

They shouldn't have been allowed a 'guess' without payment anyway so I would give it to the first one who is correct and who has paid.

Make the decision, stick to it and email it to every one who took part in the competition, whether they paid or not.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

No-one is being asked to pay. I haven't asked anybody. The winnings will now go to the person who has PAID and who is nearest... in this case it's actually the MOTHER!!! :-D

Fair enough - your PP seemed to be implying it was just this one "winning" payment you wouldn't be chasing.

When we do things like this we often get slow payers, but if anyone enters a competition/lottery etc they know they have to pay for, we generally trust that they will (and are rarely disappointed). Guess it depends how honest your colleagues are? Having said that if they've had a few months already....

You just know the guy who hasn't paid is going to complain about that! :D

Assuming you gave them plenty of opportunities and reminders *before* the results were announced, then I think it's fair to exclude non-payers from the competition.

Reminds me of an office sweepstake that I took part in where the person who organised the sweepstake ended up winning it...
