Giant breed dog bed, any one got recommendations?

Our giant dog needs a new dog bed, pronto.
Not a sofa or a single bed, but a proper dog bed. (Specific reason for it being a proper dog bed....she's always had sofas, but her back is causing her problems, and I need something lower for her, but not flat on the floor, something a smaller step up preferably,)
Realise its going to cost a packet, but accepting that. She prefers beds that have a back to them, and sides if possible, like draft excluders and are slightly raised, but we can put it on a pallet if need be.
Orthopedic/ memory foam is really what I have been thinking, but giant ones mainly seem to be plain flat ones. She's rather reluctant about those. She also prefers soft things to wipe clean things (unfortunately , as she is a bit of a stinko)
She's already not young, and its not a long term usage bed but the grey hound will inherit it.
While looks are not vital and are vastly secondary to comfort quiet tweeds fit in better than pink paw prints or animal prints.

My old lad had one of these - not cheap, but he loved it so much he was hard to budge.

The covers come off for washing, and you can get a waterproof inner cover separately if continence is an issue.0 -
I got an adult sized beanbag for my old Dane, it had a faux leather cover. She absolutely loved it... although after about 5 years she came charging in, jumped on it and it burst. Snow in June..... mind you, her face was a picture!0

I know big dog hates bean bags, And I also know the kiwi dog would destroy one in minutes. Annoyingly I left him this morning with the greyhound while big dog and I went to see the vet and he decimated a duvet:mad:. He is a perfect dog apart from his duvet and sofa killing tendencies. He ignores their other beds though, but I need something more plush for big dog now.0 -
I've got this one for my dog

Its good quality with a thick base and high sides, my whippet loves it, she has the medium size and its probably a bit too big for her (her blanket takes up more space than she does!). This goes up to "jumbo" size but unfortunately the price jumps a lot as you go up in size!0 -
What about these

Not giant breeds, but I've made mine a new bed with a foam cot mattress. The waterproof cover means I don't have to worry about the inside getting all dog-stinky and trying to cram it in the washing machine, though I've put it inside a dog bed cover (which happened to fit perfectly, phew). So a wipeable inner cover with a softer removable cover you can sling in the washing machine (and having one or two spare outer covers) could be a good compromise for a smelly dog!
I imagine buying an actual piece of memory foam or a mattress to cut down will be cheaper than a memory foam dog bed. If you're not crafty, try to find someone who is, and they can make it pretty as well as functional. You can always add sides, e.g. like this style - http://www.scot-petshop.com/shop/images/source/Dog_Beds/37261.jpg
Or add a kind of bolster along the sides and back for a floor-level doggy "sofa", like this (the bolster could just be wadding rather than memory foam too) - http://castersonlineflyshop.com/images/Gifts/1K0L.jpg0 -

Mine would like that, I think. I wonder, though, whether the sides are 'heavy duty' enough for giants.
I really like herbily's bed, because il think the risen bit of it looks 'squash proof'0 -

We have a tuffie in the car. Terrier ignores ( huge bonus...he's not that bad and my mother notice today he't got the greyhound joining in now:mad:) but they all hate to lie on it. Tuffie now has a vet be o top of it . Don't think that was the point!0 -

The orvis beds are super looking. Making something to size is a good idea. I don't even think it need be memory foam, dense normal foam might even be better. Cover really does seem a crafty step beyond my current ability tbh. ( I know how to i just don't think i physically can) I might be able to call in help. Hmm.
Tonight, she really cannot get on the sofa so we've made a make shift bed of a really solid pallet with some duvets flat for a base over a vet bed and rolled for back and sides. I'd sleep on it. She's not overwhelmed, but she is sleeping on it and refusing to share.0 -
I know you said you wanted a dog bed because of the height, but then said you could raise it rather than being on the floor. but what about a cot bed? lower than a bed, big enough for a big dog but you can pick them up cheap from eBay / Gumtree or even off Freegle.0
