why is my net connection slow?

i have broadband with bt but it is very slow and has been for a few days. i know you cannot alsways go by the speed testers but they all point to the same result and general browsing is bad as well. downloads are rubbish and not worth bothering with. i have used the standard bt tester and these are the results. does anyone have any ideas on why my connection is so slow. also how come i can connect at 4.5mb yet my ip profile and actual speed are around 0.5mb?

thank you in advance

You could have some nasties that are stealing your bandwidth. Have you run antispyware and antivirus programs

Do you download a lot? I know some ISP's restrict some people with very high usage

Your IP profile with BT is currently 500. This means at present it is the maximum speed you can get down your line. IP profiles on ADSLMAx should move up and down based on line quality, line length and all sorts of different criteria. (Mine moves between 4500 and 5500 mostly due to weather conditions and atmospheric problems).

If you can connect at 4500 and have a decent SNR it might be worth having a word with your ISP and asking them to put a fault request through to BT. Sometimes profiles get stuck on either 500 or 2000 and they need a kick to get them moving again as they would normally.

(Should note that if you were previously connecting at 500 then it can take a few days to automatically change anyway, so it may be worth leaving it a day or two to see if it climbs up)
