10 month not 1 year for car from Admiral?

I have just taken out a new policy with Admiral (which I discover has 2 other companies in the same building). When I downloaded the documents I discovered it was 10 months not a year. When I queried this, they said it was 'as requested' and it would cost an extra £74 to change it to a 12 month policy. I did not ask for a 10 month policy (why would I?), I accessed their site through gocompare.com looking for an annual policy..... When I replied again, saying that I had never been aware of a 10 month policy they just requested the extra premium again! Anyone else with a similar experience?

They do 10 month policies which gives you a year's NCD.

Looks like you got one of those.

From what I remember of my quote from admiral is that it defaults as a 10 month policy, and you have to click to change it when you go through their website. You have only been charged for 10 months, hence the increased premium if you want to extend. IIRC, you still get a full years NCB from the 10 month policy though - but you might want to check that.

Except other insurers may not count a 10 month policy as a year. Pay the extra and make it a 12 month one.

As mentioned; it only helps if you're a new driver, looking to stay with Admiral.

  • I got one of these when i just passed and it has been a pain ever since. Because I have always now had a ncd for more years than i have had a license a lot of companies won't take it.

    Click > type > enter > repeat > pay.

If you do this, without reading stuff on screen, you're likely to buy something you didn't mean to.

i was with elephant for a number of years on the 10mth policy..... worked up 5 years no claims, then moved to Your Cover who accepted the NCD.

The price was very competitive, even if you added on another 20% for 2 more months,
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?
  • They are normally badged as "NCD accelerator" or "bonus accelerator" policies. They were fairly common for a while, obviously marketed at young drivers who naturally would have low/ no NCD with the promise of getting a bigger NCD quicker.

Admiral own a series of companies and brands, have a look at http://www.admiralgroup.co.uk/business/our_companies.php to get most of the bigger ones.

Where did you actually get the quote and buy from? Was it directly on their website or via an aggregator?

My first car insurance was one of these with Admiral.

(Well, first in my own name at least, I was on Mum's policy as an "additional driver" for a good few years previously but nobody seemed to take this into consideration towards no-claims back then...)

At the time I found it to be quite a reasonable way for a young male driver to start building up their own no-claims discount; and the price was decent enough even averaged over 10 months instead of 12.

I knew in advance that some companies didn't accept the 10 month certificate as a full year's worth of no claims; but I've tended to flick back and forth between Hughes and Admiral ever since (depending on who makes more of an effort to beat the best quote I can find at renewal time) and Hughes have certainly never had an issue with it.

    It seemed to work.
I'm on 8 years (protected!) no claims now...

ive been with admiral for 30months so have 3 yrs.. at renewal not one single company refused to accept it..

ultimately i stayed with admiral because i have a box installed too, but its a no brainer to me.. 10 months, so cheaper, plus 1 yr NCD.. win win..
