Sorry Sacha, not been online for ages. Good job Custardy was about coz I wouldn't have known the answer (it's been a long, long time since I was a postie). However I did know the bit about the postman must "deliver as addressed" unless there's a valid redirection in force, which obviously there isn't. The other posters are also correct, just binning them or returning to sender doesn't solve the problem, especially with the junk mail. Adding these people to the mail preference service is a brilliant idea and one I never thought of when I was in a similar situation. My mil went for years and years getting mail for her deceased dh. Quite distressing for her really. Good luck with the post and I hope you are happier there than the previous occupants were!:)
