i heard that the diesel fuel itself lubricates the pumps and when you run a car to empty you can mess up the pumps and wreck them as they run dry.0

the pump is lubricated by the deisel oil but deisel oil leaves behind a oil residue so to wreck it while trying to start it without diesel takes time to do. this is why older diesels came with primer heads so you could suck the deisel to the canister from the tank and only risk lack of fuel to the pump for just a few seconds, before the car was restarted i made sure there was deisel upto the injectors, thus deisel in the pump, as there are no primer heads on these deisels no more its a much more harder job to try and start a diesel thats ran out of fuel.0 -

Zaffy.. as in Zafira.. made by vauxhall... surely you've heard of them? - they're very common and can be seen stabled in many Tesco car parks.
