DVD player with Surround Sound sockets?

Hope this makes sense, but we have had a Sony DAV-S300 DVD and surround sound amp built in..
We use the speakers supplied (well two for standard stereo) in the room. This DVD was from 2000 and its dying slowly, DVD's not playing and it won't touch some CD's and CDR's which is annoying
So after 13 years, we would like to replace it.
However does anyone know what the flat 2 prong sockets that the Surround Speakers connect to are called as we would like to buy an uptodate model with the same sockets so we can still use our living room speakers??
Here's a link to the picture of the rear, with the sockets coloured in the center :

Thanks, Really? Can I unscrew then and use the bare wires on a DVD player?
We only use Stereo Left/Right so 2 speakers, so any DVD models with the ability to use external speakers as we play our TV through it
Although with our new Sony TV, I wonder if its better to try and attach speakers direct to TV? that way any DVD/TV/CD from a DVD player (plugged into TV) would work to speakers just the same?0 -
Very few TV's have speaker outputs on them.
You will have to buy another surround sound DVD/amp to use your speakers as a standard DVD player won't have the necessary connections for external speakers.
A new surround system is obviously going to come with its own speaker system though.
You can remove the speaker plugs and just use the bare wires yeah.0 -
I agree with the above. Surround sound DVD players are expensive for what they are. You can make a system yourself that is far superior.0

If you want full surround sound, on the other hand, you're going to need a far more advanced set up than just two-speaker stereo.
I'd love to! but the stereo speakers have the flat two prong connectors, so i would think my TV is phono jacks or equivalent? so not sure how i connect direct?0 -
I was suggesting listening to the speakers which the TV set has as standard, not connecting a knackered 13 year pair!:eek:I'd love to! but the stereo speakers have the flat two prong connectors, so i would think my TV is phono jacks or equivalent? so not sure how i connect direct?
From what you say, you might want to consider a sound bar which is a one piece solution and seems ideal if all you want is a better stereo effect than the TV alone is able to produce.0 -
Thanks but there must be a DVD player (as we need a new one) currently on the market that has the same sockets for ease of use thats an amp too?
The 13 yr old DVD unit, surround is perfect.. but its just that as a DVD etc its failing0 -
The Sony DAV-S300 is not a DVD player, it is a "home theatre system". In other words it is an all in one solution that contains the equivalent of a DVD player, an AV Receiver/ Amp and a set of speakers.
A pure DVD player wont contain the amplifier part and so you cannot connect the speakers directly to it - the sockets are nothing to do with it. You could attach it to the Line Out level but the sound would be exceptionally quiet and you wont be able to change the level.
To be able to connect the speakers to something you need the "something" to have an amplifier built into it. Realistically you have 3 choices:
1) Buy a DVD player and a separate amp
2) Buy a secondhand home theatre system without its speakers but you may have connector shape issues
3) Buy a new home theatre system and dispose of the existing speakers
There is a fourth option of the soundbar others have mentioned but on the basis you only want stereo that seems unnecessary.
Personally I would go with option 1 as this will give you by far the best sound quality. A basic stereo amp will accept bare wire connections from speakers and so just cut the connections as has been suggested. You need to check the details of the speakers first though as they tend to be terrible and not good for connecting to a proper amplifier (I know as I tried this many years ago and got a lot of burning smell)0 -
After 13 years, I suspect the OP's speakers should be consigned to the bin rather than connected to a new amplifier!:)InsideInsurance wrote: »You need to check the details of the speakers first though as they tend to be terrible0
