why do people have bonfires?

my neighbour is having another bonfire party tonight - which means the whole estate has to rush to grab in their washing, bolt their doors and close the windows...

... IT BL00DY STINKS !!

now i have never said anything about these bonfires but have always wondered why???

it is a social event - they have people around, lots of alcohol and light a fire in the garden with rubbish & wood.

dont get me wrong, i was brought up on a council estate where everyone burnt their rubbish every now n then, but this is a private estate.

i would just like to know why? does anyone have bonfires in their garden? can anyone enlighten me on the need for such an event?

No idea, never known anyone to have a bonfire apart from on guy fawkes night, I was brought up in a council house and I live on a council estate and never seen anyone burn wood and rubbish outside.

Maybe because they are too lazy to take their stuff to the tip or recycle facility?

Someone did this recently next door to my brother and SIL, the fire was so close to their fence they genuinely thought it was gonna catch alight!! Absolutely reeked all evening and night and black ash was flying over the fence. Rank.

yeah we do get a lot of black ash coming over the fence - yuk.

they have one of them fire pit things & a patio heater so i dont think it is to keep them warm.

mmm it is a total mystery... unless they do not have an oven and are cooking spuds :p

If they're having "another" bonfire party that would suggest this is a regular occurrence and as such comes under laws regarding nuisances. Local councils can issue an Abatement Notice to those who frequently annoy their neighbours with bonfires and enforce fines of up to £5,000 should they persist.

Contact your council and find out what they regard as frequent, then start collecting evidence. Your council may also send out a deterrent letter without investigation to warn your neighbours that a complaint has been made and that they may face problems in future if they repeatedly behave in this way.

Yep, and also if the smoke from the bonfire happens to be drifting into a road causing a potential vision obstruction that is also an offence that they could be fined for, so should you notice smoke heading into a road and you are able to take a few pictures of it that could help your case :)

I like the smell of bonfires, but on my estate people only tend to burn wood, and most of the bonfire smells come from the allotments. It's much nicer than the smell of fag smoke on my washing that I took in tonight.

I suppose really it's just an excuse for a party. I have no idea why people would burn rubbish though, is that common?

We live in a "smoke free" zone but we always have a bonfire party on bonfire night - we always warn & invite the neighbours and they've never complained - I think people make allowances if it's just once a year!

To answer your question - the reason is the kids love it!

I burn garden rubbish but wouldn't invite people round for the occasion.
