Massive fail by co-operative energy

I just got a statement through from Cooperative energy stating they need to put my monthly direct debit for gas and electricity up to £100 a month (from the £60 it is now) because I've been using more energy apparently. I live in a small two bedroom flat.

I checked the gas meter reading they have for me, which shows a meter reading of 3900. However, I just checked the meter and the actual reading is 1460!

My account with co-op was set up in February, when the gas meter reader man came round and recorded a reading of 3812, however this must have been completely wrong.

I've sent a photo to Cooperative of the actual meter reading and they agree they messed up, so my bill has been wrong the whole time. They said I need to take another reading in 7 days time and then they will estimate what my bill is for the previous year from that.

Does that sound fair or not? There is no real way of knowing what amount of gas I've used over a year.

why didn't you read the meter yourself in February to make sure it was correct. If you had been reading it regularly you would have been able to identify any misreads by the meter reader. If you don't read the meter yourself and check your bills then you can't blame anyone else for mistakes that don't get corrected and you end up paying for.

If the Co-Op are happy to make an estimate then that is a good result but you may still end up paying for more than you've used if you've got no records of your usage ( or you might end up paying for less)
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Who did you move from in February?
What was the final meter reading they used?

You see, normally the losing supplier uses the meter reading the new supplier starts from (hence why you should check they are the same). If they used 3812 as used suuplied by the Co-Op you must have had one heck of a bill.
If they didn't use that gigure, then what figure did they use?
Why is it different to what the Co-Op started from? Why can't the Co-Op use it now (assuming it's reasonable)?
Then you will be billed for exactly what you used :)

I was out of the country for three months from February to May, so there was no way I could read the meter myself. I actually changed my supplier to Cooperative Energy in December but because of various hold ups at the suppliers end it didn't get switched until February.

I moved from EDF. I got all my bills sent digitally over email. I've tried to find my final bill online, but now I no longer have an account with them I'm unable to access any of my old bills.

There's no need for the snide sarcasm chump.

They read the meter wrong, not me, they're the ones who've admitted they made a mistake.

Coop don't read anyone's meters. The person that read your meter worked for an outsourcing company, say, G4S for arguments sake.

Coop have dealt with this professionally, and offered you an estimated back bill (which almost always goes in the customers favour). As Wywth says, it's hardly a fail on their behalf.

No need for ridiculous hyperbole. Co-op made one small error on a system with orders of magnitude numbers of transactions. You failed to carry out one or two basic actions that every householder should do. The only chump performing a fail is you.

Why do peeps resort to slagging other posters off,? it does not help the issue at all.
  • G4S dont read for Co op , I would be surprised if they have even bothered setting up any meter reading companys. Maybe they will do a minimum 2 year visit like a lot of micro suppliers proberbly do, in the interests of cost cutting of course
