as there are at least 400 garages in Hampshire all selling unleaded for exactly the same price of 84.9p one wonders about the need for the information on this site

Not much use to me. Seems like Tyne and Wear doesn't have any petrol stations and Co. Durham doesn't exist!!

I note that in discussion over another site authored by the proprietor, he again belittled respected anti-spyware products as over-zealous, perhaps because some of the commission received for advert views is blocked?

Talking of advertising, where is the information on the site? If not one garage in my local county has an up to date price, except the one where the site-proprietor lives, why should I assume responsibilty for adding to it, when it is commercially motivated?

These countries all have unleaded petrol at within 4p per litre of UK prices (some are higher)

Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden

It is true that UK diesel is higher than other European countries, but only in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg does the difference approach the 28 pence mentioned. 12 or 14 p is more typical.

What is the real reason for the misleading claim that UK petrol is overpriced by 17 pence per litre? What are the petition names used for?

    To clarify a few points.

As I have stated before, duty is only one contributor to the total price of a litre of petrol. Just because fuel is a similar price in another country does not mean their duty levels are as high - for one thing a number of European countries have VAT rates which are substantially higher than ours - also some EU countries do not charge road tax but instead add a levy on to fuel charges.

Our figures were taken from a EU Parliament document published in December 2004 - the latest available as far as we are able to establish.

The site is dependent upon visitor participation to update the details - it is run as a spare time activity to provide a service and much like moneysavingexpert.com depends on the site visitors participation to make it work, we simply do not have the time, manpower or financial resources to update the details for every filling station in the country ourselves.

There are very few supermarkets currently listed as it is not presently possible to obtain these details in electronic form and the entry of these details manually would be a long and onerous task.

Your email address will only be used to validate your entry on the petition and to keep you updated on developments with the findcheappetrol site or other sites developed by ourselves which we believe may be of interest to the cost concious motorist.

We do not receive any revenue from displaying ads on our site, we only receive revenue if you click on an ad and subsequently make a purchase. If you are that bothered about it there are plenty of ad blocking programmes which you can use,

The main aim of having ads to collect revenue is to cover the hosting costs of the site - which for a popular site like https://www.findcheappetrol.com receiving thousands of visitors a day are not insubstantial.

This method of covering costs is not unique - indeed speaking about MoneySavingExpert.com Martin Lewis on this page:

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/aboout.phtml#bit

    Clearly states that

"I've no intention to hide the fact it is a substantial part of my income."

So if you object so strongly to site owners earning some revenue for the hard work and dedication they put in (and incidentally all credit to Martin for running this excellent resource) - what are you doing posting here?

I have yet to find a single garage on that site that charges anything other than 84.9p/l -- have they all been reset to the same price for some reason? Or is the site just completely useless...?

This one might be another option - I use this...

    http://www.overdrive.co.uk/fuel_table.htm

It's a commercial organisation but I have found the prices to be accurate and the information complete.
If it was easy, everyone would do it!

Our figures were taken from a EU Parliament document published in December 2004 - the latest available as far as we are able to establish.
Then you might deign to correct the disingenous statement on your website
We, the undersigned, call upon the newly elected Government of the United Kingdom to reduce Fuel Duty to the European average level (the equivalent of a price reduction of per 17p per litre for unleaded and a price reduction of 26p per litre for diesel on prices as at 12th April 2005)
    (my bold highlights)

December or April? Your long explanation does not seem to excuse the misleading use of 17 pence when the real difference is an average of 3 or 4 pence for those countries.

And road tax - actually many of these countries have much higher annual road tax (hundreds), not lower as you imply. I don't support or excuse current fuel prices, but the subject would be more easily discussed without this distortion.

As for the expense and hard work involved in running a website, Martin's site is a good deal more detailed and useful. As student100 points out in amplification of others earlier remarks, it is extremely difficult to find any other price on your site than 84.9p for unleaded. It is obviously not electronically updated or complete, whereas the Overdrive site Jacster mentions looks very useful.

I have found 2 garages in Northampton and 1 in Watton that have details of their prices on your site, out of about 2000 in 6 counties.
