Contract ends in 4 days - want a better deal

My current contract (o2 18mnth, 300 min 750 texts) finishes on the 16th of July, and I've been told that I can call and try and get a better deal 30 days earlier, i.e. 4 days away.

I'd love to get a better deal and have looked at Martin's article, but would like your advice..

Should I try and haggle now or wait til I'm out of contract?

I pay £29.99/month, but am not using all my minutes or texts, I'd be happy with 100-200 mins and 500 texts. What could I realistically expect from haggling with them?

What free phone upgrade is the best to ask for? As I'd be selling it on EBay (happy with current phone).

Thanks!
Rachel.

Think you should have attempted to haggle earlier, in my own experience the new haggled tariff will start the following month, meaning if you rang today you will have to pay another month at your current tariff before the new tariff is billed....
    SLC: £13000+

    Quidco
    : £
    131.24 (paid) + £0 (validated) = £131.24
    Valued Opinions
    : £75 (paid) + £52.30 (received) + £4.50 (pending) = £131.80
    StudentPanel: £25

Oops, just realised I'd made a mistake in what I've put. Edited it now. (I've actually got 4 days, then I can call and haggle!)
  • How about a cashback deal? Perhaps you could use something like http://www.e2save.com/o2-mobile-phone/Nokia-/6233PMCL10 to put pressure on them.

I know when I renewed with 3 last year I used internet cash back deals to haggle the price down. Whilst 3 give better loyalty discounts than other networks, it might prove to be a useful bargaining tool.

Personally I would be tempted to take out a cash back deal if not.

Call the network operator re your renewal, ask for the "Disconnection department", explain that you are looking at moving to a new company and try to haggle from there. Before you do haggle make sure you know what you would like as a contract, and they may oblige or come near to it.

I've just spoken to O2 today to get my PAC code, I've been on a 12 month contract which included 50 mins and 200 texts for £19pm. The lady told me they could offer me 200 mins and 500 texts for £20pm on another 12 month contract. Not sure if that included a phone or cashback, thats just the offer I was given when I told her I was going to 3 on one of the £15 deals with the Nokia 6288.

BTW this was just by ringing customer services and selecting the option to cancel, I didn't ask for a specific department or anything as I knew I just needed my PAC code, not a better deal!

I did it the other day with Orange...

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=474265

Just started saying I would like to cancel my contact please. Then the Lady asked what was there a reason I was cancelling and I said I wanted a new phone and better deal. She then asked if she could give me a better deal would I stay with Orange and from there she started with the offers.

When you do ring up get another companies deal up in front of you. I got the T-Mobile Web 'n' Talk deal up as I wanted some Web useage free. I just had it up infront of me incase she asked me about it and not too be caught out by guessing what they offered so I could throw the answers out saying 'but they offer this etc' and it sounds like you know what your on about and have done your research.
