O2 Premium Insurance

I've been paying £10 a month for O2 Premium Insurance. My Samsung S2 recently stopped working while abroad. On returning home I left it into O2 for inspection. I was advised that the repair wasn't covered under warranty and to make a claim under the insurance.

Unfortunately I made the call to the insurance company rather hastily and wasn't fully aware of the facts and casually mentioned being on holiday and maybe it was heat damage. As a result the claim was refused on the grounds of environmental damage.

Despite an O2 report showing that the phone had accidental damage I'm unable retract the comment about heat damage. In fact the insurance underwriters Altair didn't even inspect the phone. This despite several lengthy phone conversations, trips to O2 store and a complaint. I haven't even been able to get the £10 payment made the following month when I had no phone to cover refunded as a goodwill gesture.

My fault of course for not being fully prepared or even researching O2 Premium insurance. But even the shop assistant in O2 thought it covered all aspects of a claim.

My fault again for assuming that O2 premium would be hassle free and not try to wriggle out of payment.

Complaint has been forwarded to the Financial Ombudsman.

As a result O2 have lost 5 customers. I even requested my work phone is moved to a different provider. Well it makes me feel a little better.

Just "stopped working" or was damaged?
Unlike extended warranties insurances normally don't cover faults.

Personally, I think that mobile insurances are waste of money for the majority of people, but if you do decide to pay for it you definitely have to make sure that you know what exactly you are paying for.
