Virgin Atlantic flight to Johannesburg

We suffered 14 hour delay on Flight VSO601 from Heathrow to Johannesburg on 30 April 2008. Told at check-in it was due to technical reasons. Missed out as result on day one of pricey Safari! Next day flight crew told us unofficially that the aircraft due to fly us out originally had been commandeered to take another Virgin flight to USA (New York?).
Applied for compensation and after 6 months despite reminders advised that "the aircraft scheduled to operate your flight suffered damage during a previous flight which was identified during checks on landing necessitating a lengthy repair. In order to minimise delay an alternative aircraft was secured but this inevitably caused a delay. Our delay was not therefore extraordinary and no compensation is due".
Either the aircrew the next day were wrong or Virgin have simply come up with this excuse to avoid paying compensation! Call me sceptical but I think I know what is more likely to be the truth!
We are currently appealing to the CAA in investigate.
In contrast we submitted a claim to British Airways based on Flight BA0015 from Heathrow to Singapore on 30 November 2009 being 21 hours delayed for technical reasons and were paid out in 4 weeks £1,024 (2 x £512). Well done BA.
