    Risk/Reward - That's all the equation is.

How much is travel insurance (and excess) versus the cost of missing the mode of travel and having to repurchase? And the probability of it happening? Especially if you're a frequent traveller.

Say you are planning 10 flights, each at £150.

Travel insurance to cover those flights is £200 with £50 excess.

If ONE of those flights is missed then the cost to repurchase would be less than the cost of insuring.

    Just saying. ;)

I would not consider travelling without insurance. Last policy was under £10 for a week in Mallorca (and some cashback too) you say you cannot afford travel insurance but saving £10 has cost you far more.

If it was in reverse and a flight delay caused you to miss the last train you would be in the same position. The airline would not be responsible for your additional costs getting home.

Have you claimed the taxes back off the unused flight?

I've spent over £400 on travel insurance in my life and never had to claim on it once. Even though that seems like a waste of money I've got it more to make sure I'm covered if anything serious happens while I'm away than to claim back money on missed flights.

OP I feel for you but these things happen and you have never been able to claim consequential losses on things like this. It's annoying but sadly that is the reason things like insurance exist.

He may be able to claim for what did not work without the need for the insurance. What he needed the insurance for worked fine.

I'm not sure what your quip is supposed to be attacking.

I don't quite get this post are you saying there's an alternative to Capitalism where everything's free?

If you can't afford travel insurance how can you afford a £150 flight or even a train journey? You chose to take the risk of losing money but not taking out travel insurance, I'm afraid you have to live with that and the financial consequences.

'Fraid I'm with the others here - every day we have to make choices about what's important to us, and what we will do without in order to have that. Is a £3 coffee important to us? If so, will we walk to work instead of taking the bus? In order to see the football live on PayTV will we do without a holiday? It's all choices.

You chose to travel uninsured, so that's that. In effect, if you don't take insurance, you self-insure and are liable for your own costs. Now, whether it's cheaper overall to self-insure (most of us never claim on insurance, especially with the excesses and faff-factor) or to get insurance is a gamble. Alas, looks like you took a gamble on a tenner and lost this time.
