no service, emergency calls only help

Hi all,
I have a talkmobile sim in an unlocked LG phone. I set it up for using abroad, used it sparingly last week while away, and since I've come back to the UK I have no service. I've switched off the phone, taken the sim card and battery out, waited, then put them back in, still no service. I've phoned talkmobile today to see if I have exceeded their limit of £50 for call charges while abroad and thats why I have no service, they say no, there is no bar on the sim working as far as they can see, but that it can take up to 72 hours for overseas charges to show up on my account.
Does anyone have any idea if this no service, emergency calls only is likely to be a sim issue, or a handset issue? I don't have another unlocked handset in the house to check the sim in another phone unfortunately.

When you were abroad, did you do a manual or automatic network search?
I would have assumed a phone defaults back to automatic when you restart after battery and SIM out, but maybe I've never really checked and I may be wrong ...
I've just checked on one phone and it stays at manual on restart, which in some ways makes more sense, for people who want to avoid inadvertent roaming near borders
So I think it's worth checking that, somewhere under phone settings
However the odd thing about suggesting this is that the phone should probably ask you to do a manual search
If that doesn't help maybe there is a temporary network issue where you are, but the customer services ought to have looked that up for you already
p.s. as the phone hasn't logged in here yet, it is in theory still roaming. But don't worry about the cost of potential incoming voicemails; this is free nowadays0 -
you're a genius redux!
the phone automatically chose its network in Turkey (vodafone tr with the occasional jump to turkcell). I've just tried the automatic selection here, and now my phone is back to normal, getting all my messages etc and signal strength is good for calls.
Phew, thanks again!0
